In his workshops with teachers over the years, Patrick Allen has encountered a long list of "counterfeit beliefs" about the process of conferring with students, including such comments as: "I don't have time. I don't know what questions to ask, It's too hard, I don't know what to write in my notes, I don't even take notes, I don't know how to go deep. . ." In Conferring: The Keystone of Reader's Workshop, Allen argues that the benefits of conferring are well-worth the effort of learning to do it well. And then he sets out to show teachers how to overcome all of their perceived obstacles, and make the somewhat intangible aspect of conferring tangible. Just as the keystone--a symmetrical, wedge-shaped stone at the center of an arch--forms the foundation of a structure, conferring lays the groundwork for effective reading instruction. Allen defines the word confer as a verb "meaning to consult together, compare opinions, or carry on a conversation." Conferences with students are purposeful conversations that scaffold reading comprehension strategies that guide the reader's progress, and ultimately, through the gradual release of responsibility, create independent readers. Allen begins by explaining what conferring is and what it's not, and then unpacks the essential components of the process: intimacy (the social context of conferring); rigor (the cognitive context); and inquiry (the analytical context). He explores the guiding principles of conferring--including goal setting, instruction points, listening, rapport, challenges, and teacher learning--and provides questions that lead teachers through the reader's conference from start to finish.

During the past two decades, Chris Confer and Marco Ramirez have worked to deepen and improve mathematics instruction at schools around the country. The authors identify eight tested principles that transform what can be an overwhelming process into a set of comprehensible and concrete steps. Each phase of the change process is brought to life through the stories and perspectives of teachers, coaches, and principals. When teachers make sense of math, students learn to make sense of math, and that can profoundly change the entire culture of a school. In one vivid illustration, the authors tell the story of Pueblo Gardens Elementary School in Tucson, Arizona, where Marco, as principal, and Chris, as instructional coach, worked alongside a group of dedicated teachers. A few years into the change process, Pueblo Gardens--a school with 96 percent of its students at the poverty level and a high percentage of English language learners--had 94 percent of students meeting or exceeding state standards in third-grade mathematics. Over time, other grades achieved similarly high scores. And once the test scores rose, they were sustained at high levels.

Industrial hygienists are being called on to provide expertise in more and more different fields. It is often difficult to keep up with the latest technologies in all these fields. This quick reference includes terms found in journals, books, manufacturers' literature, and other sources used daily by industrial hygienists and others. It is filled with nearly 5,000 terms in industrial hygiene, safety, and occupational medicine, plus relevant terms and abbreviations from acoustics, physics, chemistry, and biology. It contains vital information pertaining to bacteriology, environmental health, epidemiology, illumination, mathematics, medicine, microscopy, mineralogy, and other fields. Designed in an easy-to-access format, this handy sourcebook also includes terms and abbreviations used by government to enforce regulations in occupational health and safety. All information is presented in simple, non-technical language for easy understanding. In the health and safety field the disciplines of environmental health, industrial hygiene, occupational health, and safety are managed, supervised, and addressed by single groups instead of separately, as was previously done. As a result the health/safety professionals in industry today must be generalists instead of specialists. This book has been expanded in recognition of the changes in the field of Industrial hygiene. What's new in the new edition: Contains 50% more terms, definitions and abbreviations Increases coverage on each discipline Includes new entries from other disciplines such as epidemiology, microbiology, indoor air quality environmental health, and sanitation Features

The First International Nitrogen Conference provided an opportunity for researchers and decision-makers to exchange information on environmental pollution by nitrogen compounds on three scales: global, continental/regional and local. The main topics were air, ground water and surface water pollution; emission sources, atmospheric chemistry, deposition processes and effects; disturbance of nitrogen cycles, critical loads and levels; assessments, policy development and evaluation; target groups and abatement techniques; and new approaches leading to an integrated abatement strategy. The peer-reviewed papers from the Conference presented in this volume will provide readers with a comprehensive review of the transport, deposition and impact on ecosystems of nitrogen.
