In July 2007 a conference entitled «Ethical Liberalism in Contemporary Societies» was hosted by the Collegium Polonicum in Słubice, Poland. The conference was organised through collaboration between the Interdisciplinary Centre for Ethics at the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) and the Collegium Polonicum, a joint institution of the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) and the Adam Mickiewicz University Poznań. This volume collects the contributions to this conference. The problematics of liberalism affects ethicists and philosophers not only in Europe but also in Latin America and the Middle East. Scholars from these three regions met to discuss the role that the ethical aspect of liberal thought can play in the contemporary world. They also approached ethical liberalism from a historical perspective. Focusing on ethical liberalism's interconnectedness with politics, globalisation and culture, the conference participants not only elaborated on theoretical approaches, but also turned their attention to empirical case studies. Mind the Backlash: Gender Discrimination and Sexism in Contemporary Societies

Decades of campaigns and policy efforts have brought significant progress in women's economic and political status and pushed gender equality up the global policy agenda. The goal of gender equality, however, still remains largely out of reach, as illustrated by the recent wave of women's protests against sexual harassment, assault and gender violence (e.g. #MeToo movement). Some European countries (e.g. Poland, Hungary and Lithuania) have even seen their performance on gender equality backslide in recent years, and in parallel to calls for increased equality, a wave of mobilisation against gender equality has appeared in the public discourse. Conservative, authoritarian and populist voices in many democracies are now contesting the equal participation of men and women in society under the auspices of a "war on gender ideology." This backlash against women's empowerment carries considerable implications for anti-discrimination laws, policies protecting women against domestic violence, reproductive health and the establishment of gender quotas. Given the "backlash" against gender observed in various countries around the globe, we argue that now is a critical time to revisit and broaden our knowledge about gender discrimination, gender equality and sexism. Our proposed Research Topic will provide a gender perspective to illustrate and understand the recent illiberal turn in politics in a variety of contexts. Taking a comparative approach, we aim at improving our understanding of how sexism, discrimination and gender equality operate at the societal level, and how they shape broader social and political views. At the individual level, we will study the current, seemingly opposing forces—for and against gender equality— by analysing the antecedents, predispositions, experiences and motivations explaining and underpinning these attitudes towards different ways of gender equality (sexism and discrimination).




The pathological manifestations of contemporary societies: A psychological study on immaturity and its social implications.

Societies, by their very nature, are dysfunctional because they are formed by individuals who, most of the time, have difficulty perceiving reality. If 30% of people have personalities that are organized at the psychotic level, 50% of people are immature, which determines the characteristics of our unbalanced societies. Hence, this book aims to identify this problem so that humanity may be enlightened and may establish viable social organizations by means of individual consciousness. This study gathers information about all the manifestations of immaturity and analyses the social interactions. It starts with some immature intellectuals’ role in preventing social awareness from increasing. Writers and film directors are more intelligent, but what they show is not taken seriously; consequently, individuals keep on behaving in a pathological way. Without the help of any psychological treatment, immature men and women intend to get together and form societies, but they fail. Sometimes their desire for murder is so uncontrollable and their level of awareness so low that they are compelled to kill and to increase drastically social dysfunctionalities such as severe racism, Islamic terrorism and murder. When there is an economic crisis, human organizations can be so harmed that the psychopathic part of society takes the lead and turns nations into barbaric entities (World War II).
