"Hal Prince's career in the American theatre ... [as of 1974] has encompassed every aspect of producing and directing. Having served his apprenticeship with George Abbott, he co-produced in 1954 (with Robert Griffith and Frederick Brisson) the hit musical The Pajama Game. He went on to produce (with Robert Griffith and Frederick Brisson) Damn Yankees and New Girl in Town. In 1957, he produced (with Robert Griffith and Roger L. Stevens) West Side Story, and two years later (with Robert Griffith), the Pulitzer Prize-winning Fiorello! Cinema of Contradiction


Book Description

A key decade in world cinema, the 1960s was also a crucial era of change in Spain. A Cinema of Contradiction, the first book to focus in depth on this period in Spain, analyses six films that reflect and interpret these transformations. The coexistence of traditional and modern values and the timid acceptance of limited change by Franco's authoritarian regime are symptoms of the uneven modernity that characterises the period. Contradiction--the unavoidable effect of that unevenness--is the conceptual terrain explored by these six filmmakers. One of the most significant movements of Spanish film history, the 'New Spanish Cinema' art films explore contradictions in their subject matter, yet are themselves the contradictory products of the state's protection and promotion of films that were ideologically opposed to it. A Cinema of Contradiction argues for a new reading of the movement as a compromised yet nonetheless effective cinema of critique. It also demonstrates the possible contestatory value of popular films of the era, suggesting that they may similarly explore contradictions. This book therefore reveals the overlaps between art and popular film in the period, and argues that we should see these as complementary rather than opposing areas of cinematic activity in Spain.

Heinz-Uwe Haus (b. 1942), trained in the former German Democratic Republic as an actor and theatre director, among others as master disciple with some of Brechtâ (TM)s immediate students and collaborators. He directed at the Deutsches Theater Berlin and became the leader of the Academy founded in the GDR to train theatre directors. A passionate opponent of the totalitarian regime, he developed his theatre practice as an active device to provide moral strength, under conditions of dictatorship, for himself, those who worked with him, and those who saw his productions. He was involved politically in the movement that led to the collapse of the GDR. Altogether, the material collected in this book, Hausâ (TM)s own work, as well as commentaries by others from a range of perspectives, should serve not only as a documentation of the work of one major German theatre artist: it should support efforts to alert the present about aspects of the past that are all too easily and conveniently (both for all the wrong reasons), misrepresented, covered or hushed up, brushed aside and in due course forgotten. Theatre for Haus, during GDR times, was a means to survive, not only metaphorically. After liberation, post 1989, post GDR, theatre has lost nothing of its importance, quite the contrary. The book hopes to help understand both.
