In this workshop an attempt was made to fuse the disciplines involved in the requirements, specification, design and implementation of control systems for the automation of agricultural systems. The need to meet the demanding specifications for increasingly complex agricultural systems is being addressed by using increasingly sophisticated models and control algorithms. In parallel, the ever-decreasing profit margins in the agricultural sector no longer permit agriculture to operate in the traditional manner, but are forcing it to transform into a contemporary business with all the complexities that this implies. The work environment is changing rapidly and humans are moving to positions of supervision and management while automation and robotics are taking over many of the menial and tedious tasks. Modern technological developments in industrial management and control are entering agriculture and transforming it rapidly into an industry. Smaller agricultural systems are being linked to produce hierarchical large-scale agricultural systems, whose management and control demands high level intelligent decision support mechanisms. Local and wide area networks provide the relevant agricultural and economic data and facts to central production management systems where decisions are made and subsequently transferred to remote locations for execution. Agriculture, which is a highly distributed operation, is taking advantage of modern communications networks, unifying remote locations into a virtual world. Agriculture has been making significant steps in producing food and fibers of improved quality in a highly constrained economic environment. Robust control of such a largely uncertain system demands that application domain experts work closely with systems analysts and control engineers to produce systems of higher autonomy and efficiency to meet todays global challenge.

Computational Intelligence in Systems and Control Design and Applications

This book contains thirty timely contributions in the emerging field of Computational Intelligence (CI) with reference to system control design and applications. The three basic constituents ofCI are neural networks (NNs). fuzzy logic (FL) I fuzzy reasoning (FR). and genetic algorithms (GAs). NNs mimic the distributed functioning of the human brain and consist of many. rather simple. building elements (called artificial neurons) which are controlled by adaptive parameters and are able to incorporate via learning the knowledge provided by the environment, and thus respond intelligently to new stimuli. Fuzzy logic (FL) provides the means to build systems that can reason linguistically under uncertainty like the human experts (common sense reasoning). Both NNs and FL I FR are among the most widely used tools for modeling unknown systems with nonlinear behavior. FL suits better when there is some kind of knowledge about the system. such as, for example, the linguistic information of a human expert. On the other hand. NNs possess unique learning and generalization capabilities that allow the user to construct very accurate models of nonlinear systems simply using input-output data. GAs offer an interesting set of generic tools for systematic random search optimization following the mechanisms of natural genetics. In hybrid Computational Intelligence - based systems these three tools (NNs, FL, GAs) are combined in several synergetic ways producing integrated tools with enhanced learning, generalization. universal approximation. reasoning and optimization abilities.

The 5th International Conference on Field and Service Robotics (FSR05) was held in Port Douglas, Australia, on 29th - 31st July 2005, and brought together the worlds' leading experts in field and service automation. The goal of the conference was to report and encourage the latest research and practical results towards the use of field and service robotics in the community with particular focus on proven technology. The conference provided a forum for researchers, professionals and robot manufacturers to exchange up-to-date technical knowledge and experience. Field robots are robots which operate in outdoor, complex, and dynamic environments. Service robots are those that work closely with humans, with particular applications involving indoor and structured environments. There are a wide range of topics presented in this issue on field and service robots including: Agricultural and Forestry Robotics, Mining and Exploration Robots, Robots for Construction, Security & Defence Robots, Cleaning Robots, Autonomous Underwater Vehicles and Autonomous Flying Robots. This meeting was the fifth in the series and brings FSR back to Australia where it was first held. FSR has been held every 2 years, starting with Canberra 1997, followed by Pittsburgh 1999, Helsinki 2001 and Lake Yamanaka 2003.
