The Price of Justice

Book Description

A nonfiction legal thriller that traces the fourteen-year struggle of two lawyers to bring the most powerful coal baron in American history, Don Blankenship, to justice Don Blankenship, head of Massey Energy since the early 1990s, ran an industry that provides nearly half of America's electric power. But wealth and influence weren't enough for Blankenship and his company, as they set about destroying corporate and personal rivals, challenging the Constitution, purchasing the West Virginia judiciary, and willfully disregarding safety standards in the company's mines—in which scores died unnecessarily. As Blankenship hobnobbed with a West Virginia Supreme Court justice in France, his company polluted the drinking water of hundreds of citizens while he himself fostered baroque vendettas against anyone who dared challenge his sovereignty over coal mining country. Just about the only thing that stood in the way of Blankenship's tyranny over a state and an industry was a pair of odd-couple attorneys, Dave Fawcett and Bruce Stanley, who undertook a legal quest to bring justice to this corner of America. From the backwoods courtrooms of West Virginia they pursued their case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, and to a dramatic decision declaring that the wealthy and powerful are not entitled to purchase their own brand of law. The Price of Justice is a story of corporate corruption so far-reaching and devastating it could have been written a hundred years ago by Ida Tarbell or Lincoln Steffens. And as Laurence Leamer demonstrates in this captivating tale, because it's true, it's scarier than fiction.

If It Pleases the Court

Book Description

The sole intent behind the creation of this book is to tell a story of a subject line exposing legal corruption and domestic violence. Most people do realize that there is always a little corruption in any form of government, but after becoming aware of the real-life events this book portrays, this story had to be told. As you start to follow this story through the pages, I think you will be blown away and, frankly, astonished at just how far corruption can grow if not held in check. As the author, I was so taken by the story as told by J.L. Montgomery that I knew it would have to be me who would bring this story to light. If it is your desire to have a book grab your attention upfront and carry you on an epic journey of one incident building on another, this book will do it for you. Powerful and realistic story line packed with deceit, corruption, and betrayal. Even for those of you who thought you had seen or witnessed everything, this book will be a wakeup call that will show you just how far a person or organization is willing to push the lines of morality and justice to have their way. This is a story of a young lady starting out life with a bright future that quickly turned to a nightmare that she could not escape. She learned the hard way that justice can be purchased by the very people who were trying to inflict harm and destruction on her way of life. In reading my book, I hope you will agree with me that this act of judicial corruption and failure to enforce laws truly needed an avenue to be expressed and brought to the public's attention. Enjoy the read. Jax A. Stone

The Illusion of American Justice

Book Description

I had been doing some serious writing about crime and inept politicians whom I believed were selling our constitutional laws for votes, power, and greed. In the early part of 1996, I was contacted by Eugene Wzorek, a young man who had been fighting the Chicago Federal Courts for over fourteen years, asking me to help him expose the corruption he discovered during his ordeal that left him with practically nothing. I asked Wzorek, "Why me?" since there were hundreds more experienced writers than I. He told me that he had a long string of professional journalists on his case who wanted to expose the corruption, but couldn't because if they went all the way they would have lost their jobs. After a long conversation with Wzorek, I decided to give it a shot! From the beginning, I contacted politicians, political organizations, institutes, and talk-show hosts; and, in spite of all the evidence that Wzorek had, they turned us down because they feared exposing the corruption. By this time, others came forth with evidence showing how the Chicago Federal Courts also shafted them. I decided that the best way to expose all this corruption was to write a book. Since much of the corruption was taking place in the White House and on Capitol Hill, with all the lies, misdeeds, fraud, corruptive maneuvering by U.S. Senators, the U.S. Attorney General, and inept politicians trying to cover up President Bill Clinton's immoral behavior and misdeeds (even ignoring the 60(B) Rule of Law), I believed that it was time to expose the corruption on a national basis. I still believe that in spite of all the so-called modern technologies, books are the greatest source of information and the best way to go! *** "The Information that you furnished is certainly disturbing, as is the predictable attitude of the Attorney General and her minions--. I constantly watch The O'Reilly Factor and I feel certain that Mr. O'Reilly and his staff would be quite interested in what you have to say. Good luck in your quest for justice." -David P. Scorched Worth

Book Description

To effect just outcomes the justice system requires that law enforcement officers, prosecutors, and judges be committed—above all—to doing justice. Those whose allegiance is to winning, regardless of evidence, do the opposite of justice: they corrupt the system. This is the jaw-dropping story of one such corruption and its surprise ending. On Labor Day 2007, a forest fire broke out in California’s eastern Sierra Nevada and eventually burned about 65,000 acres. Investigators from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and the United States Forest Service took a mere two days to conclude that the liable party was the successful forest-products company Sierra Pacific Industries (SPI), founded as a tiny sawmill nearly sixty years earlier by Red Emmerson. The investigative report on the fire declared that SPI’s independent logging contractor had started the conflagration by driving a bulldozer over a rock, creating a spark that flew into a pile of brush. No fire had ever been proven to start that way, but based on the report the U.S. Department of Justice and California’s attorney general filed nearly identical suits against Emmerson’s company. The amount sought was nearly a billion dollars, enough to bankrupt or severely damage it. Emmerson, of course, fought back. Week by week, month by month, year by year, his lawyers discovered that the investigators had falsified evidence, lied under oath, fabricated science, invented a narrative, and intentionally ignored a mountain of exculpatory evidence. They never pursued a known arsonist who was in the area that day, nor a young man who repeatedly volunteered alibis contradicted by facts. Though the government lawyers had not known at the start that the investigation was tainted, they nonetheless refused to drop the suits as the discovery process continued and dozens of revelations made clear that any verdict against Emmerson’s company would be unjust. Scorched Worth is a riveting tale that dramatizes how fragile and arbitrary justice can be when those empowered to act in the name of the people are more loyal to the bureaucracies that employ them than to the people they’re supposed to serve. It’s also the story of a man who refused to let the government take from him what he’d spent a lifetime earning.
