When Rose doesn't accept his apology, however, he loses all hope of a happy future together. Yet he's thankful she has agreed to come to his bed to beget an heir. Known as the Ice Maiden at Queen Elizabeth I's court, Rose has been trying to forget the man she once loved—a love she thought destroyed after he spent their wedding night with his mistress. Withstanding Thomas's charms, however, is proving more difficult than she expected. Can she forgive the ultimate betrayal? Can he ever atone for what he did? Note: Courting His Countess is a novella of approximately 20,000 words, about one-quarter the size of a full-length novel. A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR COURTING HIS COUNTESS may be shorter than most of my other books, but it was one of the most difficult stories I've ever written. What Thomas did to his wife is despicable and when I began to write, I didn't think I could make you, the reader, believe he was hero material. Yet the characters and their tale wouldn't leave my head, nor would the opening lines, so I wrote the story anyway. As I progressed, and especially when I switched to Thomas's viewpoint, I realized how very male he was being, and part of me started to feel sorry for him. Being a nobleman of his time, he just didn't get it. Not until he finally saw how his actions had affected a wonderful, strong woman. COURTING HIS COUNTESS breaks one of the "rules" of the romance genre, and I know some of you will find Thomas's actions unforgiveable. I certainly don't blame you for that! But I've never been very good at sticking to the rules, and I hope you don't blame ME for listening to the voices in my head. If you like books about redemption, second chances, Christmas, hope, and history, featuring strong female characters, and men who've matured and want to make up for past mistakes, then you might like this book. Happy reading! ~CJ

This story is paced as brusquely as a waltz, and gets down to the good bits in record time. It’s a story fit to read on or near your fainting couch because the verbal games of cat and mouse, and steamy scenes will buckle your knees. Surrender appealed to the historian and romance lover in me. Alexander is an irresistible character, and so well written! All of C.J. Archer’s male MC’s have the pull of Damon Salvatore from The Vampire Diaries. There’s just something primal and magnetic about them that charms the ever-loving pants off of me." ~ 5 stars, Me Read A Lot blog DESCRIPTION Gentleman spy, Alexander Redcliff, murdered his colleague. Countess Confidential

Book Description

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Olivia Drake, a steamy Regency romance... A devoted daughter goes undercover to clear her father’s name... When her scholarly father is wrongfully accused of being the Wraith, the famed jewel thief who’s been fleecing the aristocratic set of London, Claire Hollybrooke will do anything to clear his name. Claire suspects he was set up by the noble grandfather she’s never met. Vowing to expose him, she goes undercover as Mrs. Clara Brownley, the chaperone for her cousin, Lady Rosabel. But her plan to be the ‘invisible’ servant quickly falls apart when Simon Croft, Earl of Rockford, who is supposed to be wooing Lady Rosabel, can’t keep his eyes off of the dynamic lady’s maid. As the Earl of Rockford, Simon must marry to ensure an heir for his name. Under familial pressure, he is reluctantly courting Lady Rosabel...but she pales in comparison to her beautiful and spirited chaperone, the undercover Claire. Unbeknownst to Claire, Simon secretly works for Bow Street and is the very man who put her father behind bars. As Claire digs deeper into who the real thief is, her time spent with the handsome and rakish Earl of Rockford increasingly distracts her from her mission...even as everything she thought she understood about her father is called into question. As Simon must make a choice between who his family wants him to marry and the woman his heart desires, Claire must also choose...is her disdain for the aristocracy worth missing out on the love of a lifetime? “A romantic suspense that not only keeps you turning the pages, but turns the tables on you until you’re breathless. A major craftsman of the genre.” –RT Bookclub “Elegantly written and subtly sexy.” –Booklist “A delightful fast-paced story with charming characters, great dialogue, and plenty of sexual tension.” –Rendezvous “Tremendous...exhilarating story line...Claire is a delight.” –Midwest Book Review “A wonderfully written Regency-era romance chock full of engaging characters and a sleuthing pair of lovebirds.
