Equality for Women


Book Description

Upon signing the Millennium Declaration in 2000, the international community committed itself to eight development goals with timebound targets and measurable indicators. The third of these eight goals was to 'promote gender equality and empower women'. The third Millennium Development Goal (MDG3) in the Millennium Declaration has spurred national and international efforts to improve women's situation around the globe. 'Equality for Women: Where Do We Stand on Millennium Goal 3?' tracks countries' progress with implementing and financing MDG3 by examining national experiences and successes with policies and programs. It also contains an assessment of the effectiveness of different strategies in achieving MDG3 and the financial requirements needed to attain MDG3 by 2015. 'Equality for Women' will be useful for gender analysts, policy makers, government officials, and others working to promote gender mainstreaming.

This study presents challenging findings on language choice and discourse formation in participatory development co-operation. Situated in the framework of two rural development programs in Tanzania, it questions multilingual routines in development co-operation and deals with issues of linguistic exclusion in postcolonial societies. At the same time, it demonstrates how development objectives are negotiated at grass-root level, addressing persistent questions of agency in donor-driven planning processes.

The 2006 EFA Global Monitoring Report, maps the global literacy challenge, drawing attention to new methods for measuring it more accurately. It analyses how societies have attained widespread literacy before critically examining national strategies and international commitments aimed at achieving this goal. Although adult literacy rates doubled in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Arab States and South and West Asia from 1970 to 2000, the rate of progress has slowed considerably since 1990, according to the report. If present trends continue, only 86% of the world's adults will be literate by 2015, up from 82% today.Reflecting deep-seated gender inequalities in many societies, women account for 64% of the adults worldwide who cannot read or write with understanding. This figure remains virtually unchanged from 63% in 1990. Every year, the EFA Global Monitoring Report assesses where the world stands on its commitment to provide a basic education to all children, youth and adults by 2015. Its developed by an independent team and published by UNESCO, with the UIS as a key member of the EFA monitoring team, providing statistical annexes and analysis which lay the foundations for the report.
