The Crescent, 1914 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Crescent, 1914 Five years ago the Crescent Society of the St Joseph High School pre sented the first edition of the annual known as the Crescent. The enterprise was not very successful, and was discontinued; so it remained for the class of 1914 to continue the work with great hope and confidence of its success. We hope that we may have improved upon that first annual to some degree, though we realize that ours cannot be infallible, and that many more Crescent annuals must be published before a perfect one can be formed. There is an old story of a little page in the hall of a great Knight, who desired to prove himself worthy of knighthood. One evening, while pondering how he could best attain his desire, he heard a call afar off telling him to keep the compass needle of his soul true to the north star of his great ambition, and that although his trials would be many, in the end he could not fail to succeed. He set out full of hope, but he did not realize how hard the road would be and how often he would be attacked by the monsters: discouragement and despair; but his steadfast purpose helped him to overcome these perils, and the day finally came wh'en he could at last say, I have attained success. The Crescent Moon, Vol. 5 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Crescent Moon, Vol. 5 My Dear Secker, In one of the letters that I wrote to you last year, which, along with many more valuable matters, now lies, no doubt, in Mediterranean deeps, I told you how the idea of this violent book came to me; how, that morning, while we were riding in a forest-way about dawn, a pair of soft grey doves had fluttered up from our path and set me thinking of the goddess Astarte and of her groves, of Sheba, and the fleets that sailed for Ophir. Welly here is my piece of tropical melodrama with its four persons: hero, heroine, villain and comic relief, complete; and even if it doesn't satisfy your ideas of literature, I should like to give you the dedication of the first "shocker" you have ever published, and assuredly the last that I shall ever write. Under the Stars and Under the Crescent, Vol. 1 of 2

Book Description

Excerpt from Under the Stars and Under the Crescent, Vol. 1 of 2: A Romance of East and West The mansion was a large and spacious one, embowered in trees, about two miles distant from the city; and two saddled horses, which were being slowly led back and forth by negro boys, showed that the family reunion was but temporary. General Prescott seemed about terminating the interview with his two sons, for such they evidently were from the strong family resemblance between the three. And it was with a softened voice he said.
