Today, there is growing interest in conservation and anthropologists have an important role to play in helping conservation succeed for the sake of humanity and for the sake of other species. Equally important, however, is the fact that we, as the species that causes extinctions, have a moral responsibility to those whose evolutionary unfolding and very future we threaten. This volume is an examination of the relationship between conservation and the social sciences, particularly anthropology. It calls for increased collaboration between anthropologists, conservationists and environmental scientists, and advocates for a shift towards an environmentally focused perspective that embraces not only cultural values and human rights, but also the intrinsic value and rights to life of nonhuman species. The Tiger and the Pangolin

This original and wide-ranging work examines historical perceptions of nature in China and the relationship between insider and outsider, state and village, top-down conservation policy and community autonomy. After an introduction to the history of wildlife conservation and nature reserve management in China, the book places recent tiger conservation efforts in the context of a two-thousand-year gazetteer of tiger attacks--the longest running documentation of human-wildlife encounters for any region in the world. This record offers a unique perspective on the history of the tiger as a dynamic force in the political culture of China. While the tiger has long been identified with political authority, the Chinese pangolin and its earthly magic have exerted a powerful influence in the everyday lives of those working and living in the fields and forests. Today the tiger and the pangolin, government officials and village communities, must work together closely if wildlife habitat conservation programs are to succeed. Extensive fieldwork in the Meihuashan Nature Reserve and other protected areas of western Fujian have led the author to advocate a landscape ecological approach to habitat conservation. By linking economic development to land use practices, he makes a strong case for integrating nature conservation efforts with land tenure and other socio-ecological issues in China and beyond.

In Kenya, cultural and natural heritage has a particular value. The 1st International Conference on Language and Language Teaching (ICLLT 2019) is a bi-annual international conference hosted by the Faculty of Education and Teacher Training Universitas Tidar. The 1st ICLLT 2019 brings a central issue on "New Directions of Language and Language Teaching in Facing Industrial Revolution Era 4.0". The conference serves researchers, academics, and practitioners to present the research findings, share thoughts, and experiences to improve the quality of language teaching in Indonesia. The conference invited four keynotes speakers: Hywel Coleman (University of Leeds, United Kingdom), Dr. Maizatulliza Muhammad (Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Malaysia), Dr. Robbie Lee Sabnani (National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore), and Dr. Dwi Winarsih (Universitas Tidar, Indonesia). This year's conference invited presenters with 56 articles were selected to be published. It was also a great pleasure to work with the presenters for presenting excellent papers, the committee for the hard work in organizing the conference, and all parties who have been contributing to the conference and the publication of the proceedings. We also expect that the future ICLLT will be a successful event, as indicated by the increasing contributions presented in this volume.
