Plan and Operation of the Second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1976-1980

Book Description

Abstract: As part of a series of studies authorized by Congress and conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics, the Second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES II) was conducted (similarly to NHANES I). Information on dietary intake patterns was collected and various hematological and biochemical tests, anthropometric measurements, and clinical assessments were made. An important change in approach to nutritional assessments was to investigate anemia in more detail than in NHANES I. Other major target conditions are described. Topics covered are: the sample design for NHANES II, operational plan, quality control, pilot testing and plan for analysis and publication of data. Appendixes include forms used by survey personnel. Basic Data on Anthropometric Measurements and Angular Measurements of the Hip and Knee Joints, for Selected Age Groups 1-74 Years of Age, United States, 1971-1975

Book Description

Abstract: Anthropometric and goniometric (angle) measurements from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (HANES) 1971-75 are reported. Methods for collecting data are described (trained technicians took measurements from the right side at different points). Anthropometric measurements reported include triceps and subscapular skinfolds, upper arm girth, and elbow breadth. Goniometric measurements are extension of right and left hip, abduction of right and left hip, flexion of right and left hip, internal and external rotation of right and left hip, and flexion of right and left knee. Mean, standard deviations and percentile of data are given in tabular form. Figures are used for smoothed percentiles of specific measurements. (rkm).
