While Dahlias will give good results in almost any location it is best, if possible, to select a good, average garden loam for your Dahlia-planting. Avoid the extremes of sand and gravel on the one hand and the excessively heavy, black loam on the other, and make sure that your plot is at all times well-drained. The land can be pretty heavy if there is thorough drainage. Standing water is sure death to Dahlia plants.
