The origins of the name MacPhail can be traced to the Scottish highlands where the name is the Gaelic form of the Latin "Paulus." It is believed that there were McPahails in North Carolina as early as the 1730s. The earliest known ancestor was a Daniel McPhail who came to North carolina from Scotland in the 1780s and married Elizabeth Hairr in 1791. They were the parents of four children. Descendants live in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, California and other parts of the United States.

Duncan Campbell McPhail was born between 1770 and 1773. He married Pherobe Warren (ca. 1777-1876), daughter of Isiah Warren. They lived in Sampson County, North Carolina. Descendants lived in North Carolina and elsewhere.
