Desde 1971, año denominado de Acción contra el Racismo y la Discriminación Racial por la ONU, hasta 1997, declarado Año Europeo contra el Racismo y la Xenofobia, la discriminación racial no ha ido disminuyendo, sino que, debido a múltiples causas económicas, políticas, sociales y religiosas, ha aumentado su intensidad, la variedad de sus expresiones y los terribles fenómenos a que da lugar. ¿Qué puede aportar la educación para contrarrestar u oponerse a este fenómeno? ¿Cómo puede promover la transformación social? La escuela debe ser una plataforma para el desarrollo de la interculturalidad, fomentando estrategias de aprendizaje que enseñen a los ciudadanos a leer el mundo desde diversas perspectivas, evitando el dogmatismo y la intolerancia. This book assembles a selection of essays on Discourse and Intercultural Relations presented at Murcia University in September 2004. After the recent outburst of the East-West conflict intercultural relations and the challenges embedded in intercultural communication are of increasing importance. This compilation unravels these topics from the point of view of Discourse Analysis and Cultural Studies. The main aim is to highlight the discursive strategies employed by the dominant political elite in a variety of contexts to maintain and reinforce their power position in intercultural encounters. The paramount concern is, therefore, to reflect upon the interrelations between language, power and discourse (in the Foucaultian sense). Within a broad theoretical framework, the contributions are divided into two main parts. Part I includes papers which work within the field of Critical Discourse Studies and explore ideological issues, such as the concept of 'otherness', identity, race and the mass media's manipulation of public opinion. Mutual Intercultural Relations

In culturally diverse societies, one of the biggest questions on our minds is 'how shall we all live together?' Mutual Intercultural Relations offers an answer to this fundamental and topical issue. By exploring intercultural relationships between dominant/national and non-dominant/ethnic populations in seventeen societies around the world, the contributors are each able to chart the respective views of those populations and to generate 'general' principles of intercultural relations. Culture, Race, and Class-Based Perspectives in Public Relations, edited by Damion Waymer, covers timely and understudied topics in the field of public relations (PR). This volume brings together a representative set of the papers given at the third annual Intercultural Horizons conference held in Siena, Italy, in October 2013. The conference attracted presenters and attendees from a variety of nations throughout five continents. The papers included in this volume are drawn from a series of conference sessions in which academicians and practitioners in the field offered theoretical analyses, case studies and other perspectives on intercultural studies, civic engagement and related topics.
