Derivation of Performance Statements for the Automotive Mechanics Basic Trade Course

Book Description

A project was conducted to derive a comprehensive list of the performances of a competence mechanic to satisfy the planning needs of automotive engineering lecturers, curriculum committees, researchers, course designers, and staff developers. A list of 127 tasks together with information about their relative importance and the frequency with which they are performed on the job were derived from a 1978 state-wide Australian survey of eighty-two firms. Based on the analysis of these tasks a list of performances including standards and conditions for each performance were compiled. A two-day induction course and a series of workshops were conducted to help project participants develop performance statement materials. Members of the Automotive Mechanics Working Party and the Australia Department of Further Education participated in project management. Recommendations include the training of all automotive mechanics teachers in the principles and processes used in performance statement development, and training teachers of other trades courses in methods used in this project. Appendixes constituting two-thirds of this report contain a project flowchart, project worksheets, topics, the performance statements, induction course and workshop materials, and an annotated bibliography.
