Advances in Archaeological Method and Theory, Volume 11 is a collection of papers that discusses world systems theory, modeling interregional interaction in prehistory, and the archaeological analysis of ceramics. Some papers review dating and weathering of inorganic materials, strategies for paleo-environmental reconstruction, as well as deposits and depositional events. One paper reviews the Old World state formation that occurred in West Asia during the fourth and third millennia B.C. Another paper examines the role of interactions among societies in the process of local social change, and the need for archaeologists to develop a framework in which to analyze intersocietal interaction processes. The presence of items such as ceramics is associated directly to factors of availability, functions, economic values, or ethnic affiliation. As an example, one paper cites the use and misuse of English and American ceramics in archaeological analysis in identifying cultural patterns and human behavior. Another paper notes that each biological or mechanical agent of transport and deposition has its own respective attributes on a deposit where the attributes of sedimentary particles on the deposit can be defined. From such definitions, the archaeologists can make observations and inferences. Sociologists, anthropologist, ethnographers, museum curators, professional or amateur archaeologists, and academicians studying historical antiquities will find the collection very useful.

Environmental Testing Techniques for Electronics and Materials reviews environmental testing techniques for evaluating the performance of electronic equipment, components, and materials. Environmental test planning, test methods, and instrumentation are described, along with the general environmental conditions under which equipment must operate. This book is comprised of 15 chapters and begins by explaining why environmental testing is necessary and describing the environment in which electronics must operate. The next chapter considers how an environmental test plan is designed; the methods for the environmental testing of components and materials; instrumentation and control of test chambers; shock and vibration test instrumentation; and requirements for specification writing. The reader is then introduced to factors that might affect the reliability of equipment, including high humidity environment; galvanic corrosion problems; high- and low-temperature environments; mechanical and associated hazards; transport hazards; and long-term storage. Problems posed by high altitude and space environments, nuclear radiation, and acoustic noise are also discussed. The final chapter is devoted to environmental protection techniques and looks at the effects of climatic environments on radio interference as well as the effects of the environment on the human operator. This monograph will be of value to materials scientists and electronics engineers as well as those engaged in the design, development, and production of professional and military equipment.

The technical note contains a listing of all known organizations or agencies which may be designated as a materials information center on the basis of their activities concerned with the collection and disemination, in some manner, of information on a class, group, or type of material, or materials. The purpose of this technical note is to provide interested personnel of the Department of Defense, its contractors, and materials suppliers with a means of locating and obtaining information pertinent to their specific area of interest. This book is a comprehensive resource covering the principles and practice of the conservation and restoration of furniture, and other decorative art objects made wholly or partly of wood. It integrates theory with practice to show the principles which govern interaction between wooden objects, the environmental and conservation treatments and the factors which need to be taken into account to arrive at acceptable solutions to conservation problems. The practical knowledge and experience of a team of conservators active in the field are bought together with theoretical and reference material from diverse sources and unified within a systematic framework. Specialist conservators from related disciplines cover diverse materials often incorporated into furniture.
