Chief officers have become professional managers who have been charged with the responsibilities of planning, leading, organizing and controlling a business, in this case fire departments. One tool that has been working for professional managers is the SOP. It has become a vital element of a department's internal communications. Research sharply indicated that professional chief officers have developed good, solid SOP manuals and by doing so they have been ready to meet the ever changing needs of their departments and will more easily meet the challenges of tomorrow.

This special project focuses on developing and implementing Investigation Standard Operating Procedure (SOPs) for the Columbus, Mississippi, Fire Department. These SOPs are to give fire officers and investigators a guideline in finding origin and cause at a fire incident. Through the extensive research, new fire investigation SOPs were added to the old SOPs to produce a more efficient and effective fire prevention program. Also, an Investigation Command System was developed to assist the department in handling a large investigation.
