Devils, Not Men

Book Description

Men to Devils, Devils to Men

Book Description

The Japanese Army committed numerous atrocities during its pitiless campaigns in China from 1931 to 1945. When the Chinese emerged victorious with the Allies at the end of World War II, many seemed ready to exact retribution for these crimes. Rather than resort to violence, however, they chose to deal with their former enemy through legal and diplomatic means. Focusing on the trials of, and policies toward, Japanese war criminals in the postwar period, Men to Devils, Devils to Men analyzes the complex political maneuvering between China and Japan that shaped East Asian realpolitik during the Cold War. Barak Kushner examines how factions of Nationalists and Communists within China structured the war crimes trials in ways meant to strengthen their competing claims to political rule. On the international stage, both China and Japan propagandized the tribunals, promoting or blocking them for their own advantage. Both nations vied to prove their justness to the world: competing groups in China by emphasizing their magnanimous policy toward the Japanese; Japan by openly cooperating with postwar democratization initiatives. At home, however, Japan allowed the legitimacy of the war crimes trials to be questioned in intense debates that became a formidable force in postwar Japanese politics. In uncovering the different ways the pursuit of justice for Japanese war crimes influenced Sino-Japanese relations in the postwar years, Men to Devils, Devils to Men reveals a Cold War dynamic that still roils East Asian relations today.

City of Devils

Book Description

"In the 1930s, Shanghai was a haven for outlaws from all over the world: a place where pasts could be forgotten, fascism and communism outrun, names invented, fortunes made--and lost. 'Lucky' Jack Riley was the most notorious of those outlaws. An ex-Navy boxing champion, he escaped from prison in the States, spotted a craze for gambling and rose to become the Slot King of Shanghai. 'Dapper' Joe Farren--a Jewish boy who fled Vienna's ghetto with a dream of dance halls--ruled the nightclubs. His chorus lines rivaled Ziegfeld's. In 1940 they bestrode the Shanghai Badlands like kings, while all around the Solitary Island was poverty, starvation and genocide. They thought they ruled Shanghai; but the city had other ideas. This is the story of their rise to power, their downfall, and the trail of destruction they left in their wake."--Jacket

All the Devils Are Here

Book Description

Hailed as "the best business book of 2010" (Huffington Post), this New York Times bestseller about the 2008 financial crisis brings the devastation of the Great Recession to life. As soon as the financial crisis erupted, the finger-pointing began. Should the blame fall on Wall Street, Main Street, or Pennsylvania Avenue? On greedy traders, misguided regulators, sleazy subprime companies, cowardly legislators, or clueless home buyers? According to Bethany McLean and Joe Nocera, two of America's most acclaimed business journalists, many devils helped bring hell to the economy. All the Devils Are Here goes back several decades to weave the hidden history of the financial crisis in a way no previous book has done. It explores the motivations of everyone from famous CEOs, cabinet secretaries, and politicians to anonymous lenders, borrowers, analysts, and Wall Street traders. It delves into the powerful American mythology of homeownership. And it proves that the crisis ultimately wasn't about finance at all; it was about human nature. Just as McLean's The Smartest Guys in the Room was hailed as the best Enron book on a crowded shelf, so will All the Devils Are Here be remembered for finally making sense of the financial meltdown and its consequences.

Dances with Devils

Book Description

For more than a decade, Jacques Pauw has traversed his native continent in pursuit of warlords and drug traffickers, child soldiers and charlatans, adventure and anarchy. What he found was a rich array of personalities and a panoply of stories, ranging from the profoundly tragic to the intensely personal. Pauw’s stories range from South Africa to Rwanda, from Sierra Leone and the Sudan to Mozambique. Readers are taken behind the scenes of sensational news reports with compassion, humour and occasional cynicism and emerge in the knowledge that, even if it’s true that there is nothing new out of Africa, the writer has found fresh ways to present time-honoured tales of love, life, misery and mortality.

The Devils Wimp Was Gods Man

Book Description

Why This Book In the late 1980's I started Ministering at different Men Jails and Prisons in California. This particular time as I was getting ready to go to my assigned Pod, there were Deputies bringing in Men shackles by their hands and feet; one of the Men looked at me and said we need prater too. I always wanted to go into the Pod where the gangs were, but they never allow me. My Hear would cry for them because they would allow gang members to be in the same cells and you could actually feel the tension. I ministered at Chuckawalla and Ironwood Prison in Blyte CA; Donovan Prison which is in San Diego, CA. The talent and gifts that were in the Jails and Prisons blew my mind because all these gifts and talents were locked up. The Devils Wimp was born in 1989, and the Lord bless me to preach it in the prisons and jails. Let's Get to Eden was born in 2010. I was visiting this church in Rialto CA and they sang the song Let's Get Back to Eden living on top of this world. And in January 2011, the Lord blessed me to have Men's Conference "Let's Get Back to Eden because You're Up Front On Top and In Charge" was the theme. In 2016 was when the Lord out the titles together and He wanted it in book form, so here it is. Truly just seeing the miraculous hand of God's work in the lives of Men, the transformation is awesome. Why the book, because men are hurting wanting to be delivered and set free. They really don't like themselves the way they are, but they have so much pride and would rather stay that way until they are urged by God that they need to be delivered. When God sets them up and touch their heart truly they are ready to get rid of the pride and every chain that is keeping them in bondage and want to be free. Just seeing them crying and crawling on the floor trying to get to the altar, and God meeting them there at the altar is life changing not just for them but for us also. Just seeing the new creation bloom. There was one time I was having a Men's fellowship in my one-bedroom apartment. I didn't' think it was going to be that man men there. It was fifty men and they were in the balcony, living room, dining room and in the kitchen and they were like sardines. I forgot the message that God has given me but man oh man, oh man it was truly a set up by God. Afterwards, (I always was the only there) I would have a couple of ladies that would help me serve food. When they walked in they were shocked and guess what my Brothers in Christ cleaned up and put everything back in order. Why the book, just like us ladies men have been mistreated, rejected, betrayed, bruised, abused and the list goes on and on, so have they. And God wants His men to be encouraged and strengthened, Delivered and set free so they could be the Real Men, husbands, father's, uncles, grandfathers, and brothers' that God ha call them to be. My prayer is that every make would allow The Man (Jesus Christ) into their lives, so He could teach them how to take their Rightful place in this world and take dominion (rule) over everything God has given them, they way it was in Eden ( the garden of delight)....

The Devil's Right-Hand Man

Book Description

The case of Robert Charles Browne, who may be one of America’s most prolific serial killers, was supposed to be a cold one. But that was before three retired buddies took it on. “The score is you one, the other team 48,” wrote Robert Charles Browne in March 2000, from his prison cell in Colorado, where he was serving a life sentence for a girl’s murder. “Seven sacred virgins entombed side by side, those less worthy are scattered wide.” No one in local law enforcement knew what to make of this message. Then three friends, volunteer members of the El Paso Sheriff’s Department cold case squad, decided to write back to Browne. Browne boasted about having killed as many as forty-eight people in a cross-country murder spree spanning twenty-five years. As the old friends parsed the riddles, investigators followed clues leading to a confession and the closure of another heartbreaking case. This is their story. Includes photographs
