How two British World War I-era planes came to be found many decades later in India and returned to their former glory. In 2000, upon hearing rumors of aircraft parts being found in a maharaja’s palace in India, Guy Black took a trip that would lead to the most unexpected discovery of his life. Hidden away in a former elephant stable of the maharaja’s palace in Bikaner, Rajasthan, were the hulks of at least two DH9 bombers. This was no example of this WWI aircraft in existance in Britain. With D-5649 restored as a static and proudly on display at IWM Duxford, he then set about getting E-8894 back to airworthy status. The book then moves on to the highly anticipated flight of E-8894 and the years of frustration that followed until its maiden flight with “Dodge” Bailey at the controls on May 13, 2019—making it the only WWI bomber flying anywhere in the world. No 206 Squadron began its life with the formation of the Royal Air Force in April 1918. Like many other units, it was absorbed into the fledgling RAF from its previous existence as No 6 Squadron RNAS, formed in December 1916. This is the story of the unit from its early days in World War I, through roles as a fighter squadron, a transport squadron, a maritime patrol squadron and a test and evaluation squadron.The tale is told with many personal recollections, with contemporary photographs, maps and drawings and with extracts from Operational Record Books. The terrible toll on men and machines in World War I is described in the early chapters. Subsequent chapters dealing with World War II detail the long, boring but essential ocean patrols, interspersed with stories of extraordinary valour in the face of enemy fire. The Cold War saw involvement in the Berlin Air Lift, in the Hydrogen Bomb tests at Christmas Island and in further long ocean patrols. More recent events in Iraq and Afghanistan kept the squadron occupied until its disbandment in 2005. Finally, its resurrection as 206(Reserve) Squadron in 2009 as a Test and Evaluation Squadron brings the story up to date.Andrew Collins, a member of 206 Squadron, has researched the recent activities of the Squadron and added a chapter to Gunn's original text. The authors of Bloody April 1917 present a new volume of facts, photos, and analysis covering aerial combat in the last days of the Great War. Fifteen months after the events of April 1917, more battles had been fought, won and lost on both sides, but now the American strength was feeding in to France with both men and material. With the mighty push on the French/American Front at St. Mihiel on September 12 and then along the Meuse-Argonne Front from the 26th, once more masses of men and aircraft were put into the air. They were opposed by no less a formidable German fighter force than had the squadrons in April 1917, although the numbers were not in their favor. Nevertheless, the German fighter pilots were able to inflict an even larger toll of British, French, and American aircraft shot down, making this the worst month for the Allied flyers during the whole of World War I—and this just a mere six weeks from the war’s bloody finale. This book analyzes the daily events throughout September with the use of lists of casualties and claims from both sides. It also contains seven detailed appendices examining the victory claims of all the air forces that fought during September 1918. Although it is difficult to pinpoint exactly who was fighting who high above the trenches, by poring over maps and carefully studying almost all the surviving records, the picture slowly begins to emerge with deadly accuracy.
