The physics of ordered materials is much better understood than that for the disordered materials. The lack of a long range periodic structure makes it difficult to develop the theory of disordered materials. It is not surprising that one often finds it difficult to interpret the experimental data of these systems. In recent years, materials research has increasingly focused on understanding the disordered state of matter.

Recent Developments in Condensed Matter Physics

These volumes contain the invited and contributed talks of the first general Conference of the Condensed Matter Division of the European Physical Society, which took place at the campus of the University of Antwerpen (Universitaire Instelling Antwerpen) from April 9 till 11, 1980. The invited talks give a broad perspective of the current state in Europe of research in condensed matter physics. New developments and advances in experiments as well as theory are reported for 28 topics. Some of these developments, such as the recent stabilization of mono-atomic hydrogen, with the challenging prospect of Bose condensation, can be considered as major break throughs in condensed matter physics. Of the 65 invited lecturers, 54 have submitted a manuscript. The remaining talks are published as abstracts. The contents of this first volume consists of 9 plenary papers. Diffuse X-ray Scattering and Models of Disorder

Diffuse X-ray scattering is a rich source of local structural information over and above that obtained by conventional crystal structure determination. The main aim of the book is to show how computer simulation of a model crystal provides a general method by which diffuse scattering of all kinds and from all types of materials can be interpreted and analysed. Since the first edition was published in 2004 there have been major improvements both in the experimental methods for recording diffuse scattering and in our ability to analyse it. The advent of new and better detectors means that fully 3-dimensional diffuse scattering data can be collected routinely for even quite small samples and computational power that is now available has continued its upward trend, meaning modelling calculations inconceivable in 2004 are now routine. The final part of the book traces these recent developments and outlines their future potential in the field.




Recent Developments in Micromechanics

This volume contains the lectures presented at the mini-symposium on "Micromechanics" held in conjunction with the CSME Mechanical Engineer ing Forum 1990 between the 3rd and 8th June, 1990 at the University of Toronto, Canada. The expressed purpose of this symposium was to discuss some recent developments in the Micromechanics of Materials and how ad vances in this field now relate to the solution of practical engineer ing problems. Due to the time limit set for this section of the Engineer ing Forum as well as the restriction on the number of papers to be pre sented, it was not possible to cover a much wider range of topics. How ever, an attempt was made to include the most important advances asso ciated with the progress made in micromechanics in its application to material science and engineering over the past decade. Thus, the topics are concerned with: the fundamental aspects of the thermodynamics of structured solids (part I), - the micromechanical behaviour of alloys (part II), - the modelling of the material behaviour on the basis of continuum theory (part III), and finally the important new approach to the characterization of various mate rials and their responses to external agencies by the use of proba bilistic micromechanics (part IV).
