Distributed Object-oriented Data-systems Design

Book Description

This guide deals with the design and implementation of advanced information systems. It covers object-oriented data management systems, distributed environments, and advanced user interfaces i.e. those integrating text, pictures, video and sound. This book also focuses on migration issues involved in going from relational database management systems to object-oriented database management issues, and discusses the advantages/disadvantages of both types of systems. The authors have developed a unique Frame-Object Analysis Methodology for advanced modelling. It also shows the reader what constitutes an advanced distributed information system and how to design and implement one. The handbook will benefit database analysts, database administrators, programmers and members of technical staff interested in data models. Andeleigh is the author of UNIX SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE.

Data-Oriented Design

Book Description

The projects tackled by the software development industry have grown in scale and complexity. Costs are increasing along with the number of developers. Power bills for distributed projects have reached the point where optimisations pay literal dividends. Over the last 10 years, a software development movement has gained traction, a movement founded in games development. The limited resources and complexity of the software and hardware needed to ship modern game titles demanded a different approach. Data-oriented design is inspired by high-performance computing techniques, database design, and functional programming values. It provides a practical methodology that reduces complexity while improving performance of both your development team and your product. Understand the goal, understand the data, understand the hardware, develop the solution. This book presents foundations and principles helping to build a deeper understanding of data-oriented design. It provides instruction on the thought processes involved when considering data as the primary detail of any project.

Distributed Systems

Book Description

The purpose of this book is to make the reader famliar with software engineering for distributed systems. Software engineering is a valuable discipline in the develop ment of software. The reader has surely heard of software systems completed months or years later than scheduled with huge cost overruns, systems which on completion did not provide the performance promised, and systems so catastrophic that they had to be abandoned without ever doing any useful work. Software engi neering is the discipline of creating and maintaining software; when used in con junction with more general methods for effective management its use does reduce the incidence of horrors mentioned above. The book gives a good impression of software engineering particularly for dis tributed systems. It emphasises the relationship between software life cycles, meth ods, tools and project management, and how these constitute the framework of an open software engineering environment, especially in the development of distrib uted software systems. There is no closed software engineering environment which can encompass the full range of software missions, just as no single flight plan, airplane or pilot can perform all aviation missions. There are some common activities in software engi neering which must be addressed independent of the applied life cycle or methodol ogy. Different life cycles, methods, related tools and project management ap proaches should fit in such a software engineering framework.

Object-oriented Technology for Database and Software Systems

Book Description

Object orientation has become a ?must know? subject for managers, researchers, and software practitioners interested in the design, evolution, reuse and management of efficient software components. The book contains technical papers reflecting both theoretical and practical contributions from researchers in the field of object-oriented (OO) databases and software engineering systems. The book identifies actual and potential areas of integration of OO and database technologies, current and future research directions in software methodologies, and reflections about the OO paradigm. In providing current research and relevant information about this promising and rapidly growing field of object-oriented databases and software engineering systems, this book is invaluable to research scientists, practitioners, and graduate students working in the areas of databases and software engineering.

A Distributed Object-Oriented Database Application Design

Book Description

The purpose of this study is to analyze and develop a distributed object-oriented database management system (DOODBMS) application to support parallel software development of the Parallel Algorithms and Applications Group (PAAG) at AFIT. By following the software lifecycle of object-oriented paradigm, this thesis investigation is intended to generate requirements analysis, design, implementation, user interface design and implementation, and integration of the database application with the user interface. ITASCA, an existing DOODBMS platform, has been chosen to prototype the application for its distribution functionalities and object-oriented modeling power. The user interface of the database application is based on X-window OSF/Motif front-end system for its efficiency. Various operations of this distributed database include: retrieve information in the database, modify data at the local site, look up information of publications of libraries, etc. The user may access each local computer through graphical user interface without knowing the query language constructs of the DOODBMS platform ... Database management system (DBMS), Object-oriented database management system (OODBMS), Distributed object-oriented database management system (DOO-DBMS), User interface application design, Motif user interface design.
