Dodge Ball in the Dark

Book Description

Dodge Ball in the Dark is volume five in the Lynch's Corner series of short stories. This book moves away from the Lynch family and focuses on members of the Carr family, in particular Mike Carr. The stories cover a period of twenty-five years, from the first stirrings of the teen years, to the mature man who marries. Mike deals with the death of his dog, encountering a carnival of Gypsies, first love, temptation, working in a distillery, in the classroom as a teacher. A love theme flows through several stories. We glance over his shoulder as he meets odd characters, attends a most unusual funeral, goes hunting, plays golf with his friends, goes a-caroling in July, deals with the heartbreak and disappointment of his students, and meets unsavory characters. We meet recurring characters Ludlow Carr and Fingers Malone, both World War II spies, and observe their growth. All in all, we get to know Mike Carr, who is the protagonist for Mr. Summers' first novel, The Amber File, scheduled for publication next year.

The Death of Dodge Ball

Book Description

The Death of Dodge Ball is an in-depth look at how my generation of parents have forced their views on our public education system. These extreme views are single-handedly destroying the most popular game ever created: dodgeball. Over the past thirty years of being a gym teacher in New York state, I have watched and fought against this assault on our children’s journey through their wonder years. Come take a look at our current education system as well as a good look back at your childhood. You may be surprised at what you find. I wrote this book over ten years ago. With the thought that if I keep fighting, I might create a teaching environment that parents and administrators would come to see as essential for our kids. But as my thirty-year teaching and coaching career comes to an end, I realize that I need help from my fellow Americans. Here is my story.

Meet Me on the Paisley Roof

Book Description

Trussell Jones has a problem. He is crazy in love with a beautiful girl named Ellen. The problem? He has no car. His stepmother, who believes that she is spiritually connected to Queen Victoria, won't let him drive. Furthermore, she is afraid Trussell is trying to kill her. Not to be overlooked is the fact that Trussell is being pursued by a gang of armed redneck motorcycle hoods, while his neighbors are preoccupied with changing visions of St. Francis. Just another heartwarming tale of a boy in love with a girl? Hardly. This delightfully quixotic coming-of-age story, set in Columbus, Georgia in the 1950s, truly has something to shock and beguile even the most jaded reader. Its irreverent protagonist will take you on a road trip of hits, near misses, twists, and sudden turns that'll set you on your ear. You'll be unable to put the book down, until you reach its charming yet totally unpredictable conclusion.

From the Dark Side

Book Description

The Barry Patch

Book Description

These are true stories, but some names have been changed to protect the author's butt. It would best be described as a humorous collection of life snapshots. It's about growing up in the 1960s and awkward circumstances we found ourselves in. It's about being parents of small children at the turn of the 21st century and living out those TV commercial like situations parents can only hope to survive. The stories are designed to give the reader an emotional boost as they sip their morning coffee, perhaps giggle a little bit, then face the challenging day ahead.

The Tushey Wushy Club Book

Book Description

There are things in life that can pass you by if you do not pause to take the time to be observant. There are things in life that should be protected, some of those fade away insignificantly. One such thing is, "What goes on behind the closed doors of a sacred society sworn to secrecy?" If I write this...am I violating the sacredness of trust and oath wherein I was sworn as an original founding member of this sacred, honorable society? Obviously, I have decided to disclose. I press on solely due to one agonizing reality, which is should I fail to tell this tale, it too stands to be forgotten. Some things have a far-reaching effect that only becomes discovered later by historians and poets. Legends, generally, come from such documents and diaries. As you ponder this fact, you may find yourself wishing to become a legend too! I like to believe there are a select breed, a few good fellows and females out there, many kindred spirits to the Tusheys creed. Only reading will tell.

My Brother the Pope

Book Description

Be sure to check out the for more information. It wasn't always the case that Msgr. Georg Ratzinger lived in the shadow of his younger brother, Joseph. Georg was an accomplished musician, who for over 30 years directed the Regensburger Domspatzchor, the world-famous boys choir of the Regensburg cathedral. Brother Joseph was a brilliant young professor, but mostly known in German academic circles. Now Georg writes about the close friendship that has united these two brothers for more than 80 years. This book is a unique window on an extraordinary family that lived through the difficult period of National Socialism in Germany. Those interested in knowing more about the early life of Benedict XVI will not be disappointed. They will also learn of the admirable character and inspiring example of the parents, and see how the Catholic faith can shape not just a family, but an entire culture-in this case, that of Bavaria. Georg's reminiscences are detailed, intimate, and warm. And while they begin with the earliest years of the Ratzinger family, they continue right up to the present day. This is not simply a book to satisfy curiosity about a "celebrity", though it certainly does that. It's a beautiful portrait of Catholic family life and, in the most literal sense, of enduring fraternal charity. Georg has a talent for telling a story, and the co-author fills in some of the larger historical background. The many photographs, both in black and white and in color, round out a thoroughly enjoyable and inspirational book. Illustrated with 47 photographs.
