So This is Permanence

Book Description

A treasure trove of personal writings by the great post-punk singer-songwriter—with a foreword by his wife Deborah and an introduction by Jon Savage. So This Is Permanence presents the lyrics and personal notebooks of one of the most enigmatic and influential music artists of the late twentieth century, Joy Division’s Ian Curtis. The fact of the band’s relatively few releases belies the power and enduring fascination its music holds, especially in light of Curtis’s tragic suicide in 1980 on the eve of the band’s first American tour. This volume features Curtis’s never-before-seen handwritten lyrics, accompanied by earlier drafts and previously unpublished pages from his notebooks that shed fascinating light on his writing and creative process. Also included are an insightful and moving foreword by Curtis’s widow Deborah, a substantial introduction by writer Jon Savage, and an appendix featuring books from Curtis’s library and a selection of fanzine interviews, letters, and other ephemera from his estate.

Evolution

Book Description

On Dec. 17, 2004, Warren Lipka, Spencer Reinhard, Eric Borsuk and Charles Allen II visited the Special Collections Library at Transylvania University in disguise, under the guise of viewing some of the library's most valuable items, including a first edition of Charles Darwin's "On the Origin of Species." Once in the room, the men attacked a librarian with a taser, tied her hands and feet and blindfolded her. The men took the Darwin book, sketches by John James Audubon and other materials they then tried to sell in New York City. The auction house became suspicious, the four men were arrested in February 2005, and each was sentenced to seven years in prison. (Goodreads.com).

The Music Lesson

Book Description

From Grammy-winning musical icon and legendary bassist Victor L. Wooten comes an inspiring parable of music, life, and the difference between playing all the right notes…and feeling them. The Music Lesson is the story of a struggling young musician who wanted music to be his life, and who wanted his life to be great. Then, from nowhere it seemed, a teacher arrived. Part musical genius, part philosopher, part eccentric wise man, the teacher would guide the young musician on a spiritual journey, and teach him that the gifts we get from music mirror those from life, and every movement, phrase, and chord has its own meaning...All you have to do is find the song inside. “The best book on music (and its connection to the mystic laws of life) that I've ever read. I learned so much on every level.”—Multiple Grammy Award–winning saxophonist Michael Brecker

Bass, Mids, Tops

Book Description

An oral history of the UK's soundsystem culture, featuring interviews with Dubmaster Dennis Bovell, Skream, Youth, Norman Jay MBE, Adrian Sherwood, Mala, and others. In the years following the arrival of the Windrush generation, the UK's soundsystem culture would become the most important influence on contemporary pop music since rock and roll. Pumped through towering, home-built speakers, often directly onto the thronged streets of events like the Notting Hill Carnival, the pulsating bass lines of reggae, dub, rave, jungle, trip hop, dubstep, and grime have shaped the worlds of several generations of British youth culture but have often been overlooked by historians obsessed with swinging London, punk, and Britpop. This oral history, consisting of new interviews conducted by respected dance music writer Joe Muggs, and accompanied by dramatic portraits by Brian David Stevens, presents the story of the bassline of Britain, in the words of those who lived and shaped it. Features interviews with Dubmaster Dennis Bovell, Norman Jay MPE, Youth, Adrian Sherwood, Skream, Rinse FM's Sarah Lockhart and many others.

Ten Things I Hate About Me

Book Description

'This is a remarkable book. The honesty is startling and potent' Dawn French 'You have to buy this book. I mean it. It's very funny and sad and utterly true. It's a life-saver' Miriam Margolyes Hi. I hope you're ok. My name's Joe, and I have one job, every day: don't kill myself. I live with a complex mental illness called Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). 15% of people with BPD die by suicide, and 40% try. I'm already in the 40%. My job is to keep out of the 15%. In this book I want to try and explain what life is like when you have a brain that is essentially trying to murder you every day. It's a collection of the funny, sad and shocking stuff that has happened to me along the way. Writing this book has been the hardest thing I've ever done. It had to be dragged into the world, with my condition telling me that every single word, sentence and chapter was terrible and would make strangers walk up to me in the street and punch me in the face. But I had run out of options. I'd done everything I 'd been told to do and I still thought about killing myself every day. So I wrote this book to save my life. But if there is even the smallest chance that me telling you how I live with me helps you live with you; if it opens up a space for someone, somewhere to be more honest about their mental illness, it will have been worth it. Please don't kill yourself. Love Joe xx 'Please read this book. It will make the world a better place' James O'Brien 'This book will save lives' Lorraine Kelly 'Just holding this book will make you a better person' Paddy McGuinness 'Truly ground-breaking...I gulped it down in one greedy go, crying and laughing as I went' Bryony Gordon 'Painfully honest but funny and very human' Shaparak Khorsandi 'I loved its humour, compassion and deep honesty' Katherine May 'He tries to explain what your life is like when you essentially have a brain that's trying to kill you every day.'
