This volume covers the proceedings ofthe ICASE/LaRC workshop on "Finite Element Theory and Application" held during July 28-30, 1986. The purpose of this workshop was to provide an update on the status of finite element theory, to assess the impactoftbis theory on practice, and to suggest directions for Cuture research. There were thirteen participants in the workshop. Some of them were leading mathematicians working on the finite element theory, and the rest expert practitioners in the areas of fluid dynamics and structural analysis. The first six articles in this volume provide a brief review of the theoretical and computational aspects of finite element methods (FEM). The remaining seven articles deal with a variety of applications highlighting the type of results that are possible, and indicating areas which deserve future research. The first article is by Temam. lt provides an introduction and overview of the general finite element methods for the nonspecialist. lt also illustrates the power of finite element methods with two specific applications-the free surface flowjstructure interaction problern and the compressible Euler solu tion to the flow past a finite aspect ratio flat plate at incidence. The second article by Brezzi is againan introduction and overview ofmixed finite element methods. lt includes a brief discussion of special techniques for solving the discrete problem, as weil as some applications to certain basic problems in elasticity and hydrodynamics.

The book covers classical and practical approaches to electromagnetic field solutions in magnetic devices. The following topics are addressed: Advanced computional techniques; Intelligent computer aided design; Magnetic materials; Inverse problems; Magnetic sensors and transducers; Performance and optimisation of devices; Applications to electronic systems; Modelling of non-linear systems and other related topics. This volume presents 200 of the best articles presented at the International Symposium on Non-Linear Electromagnetic Systems (ISEM in Cardiff, Wales). The previous ISEM papers were published in the successful volume Advanced Computational and Design Techniques in Applied Electromagnetic Systems (by Elsevier).Main chapters in this book are: Electromagnetic Devices: Non-linearities at contacts and interfaces in semiconductor structures by R.H. Williams as key-note. Optimisation, Inverse and Biological Studies: Power loss testing; intelligent computation of optimization of metal cutting; grid methods for CFD and CEM. Magnetic Materials: Materials for circuit semilator applications; rotational magnetostriction. Computational Techniques and Modelling: Electromagnetic device design; soft magnetic materials; engineering application of artificial intelligence. Sensors and Non-destructive Testing: Eddy current nondestructive evaluation; nonlinear magnetoresistance; micro magnetic sensor. Electronic and Electrical Applications: Non-linear transistor parameters; superconducting magnets.

This book is a collection of 65 selected papers presented at the 7th International Conference on Scientific Computing in Electrical Engineering (SCEE), held in Espoo, Finland, in 2008. The aim of the SCEE 2008 conference was to bring together scientists from academia and industry, e.g. mathematicians, electrical engineers, computer scientists, and physicists, with the goal of intensive discussions on industrially relevant mathematical problems, with an emphasis on modeling and numerical simulation of electronic circuits and devices, electromagnetic fields, and coupled problems. This extensive reference work is divided into five parts: 1. Computational electromagnetics, 2. Circuit simulation, 3. Coupled problems, 4. Mathematical and computational methods, and 5. Model-order reduction. Each part starts with an general introduction followed by the actual papers.

This volume collects selected contributions from the “Fourth Tetrahedron Workshop on Grid Generation for Numerical Computations”, which was held in Verbania, Italy in July 2013. The previous editions of this Workshop were hosted by the Weierstrass Institute in Berlin (2005), by INRIA Rocquencourt in Paris (2007), and by Swansea University (2010). This book covers different, though related, aspects of the field: the generation of quality grids for complex three-dimensional geometries; parallel mesh generation algorithms; mesh adaptation, including both theoretical and implementation aspects; grid generation and adaptation on surfaces – all with an interesting mix of numerical analysis, computer science and strongly application-oriented problems.
