East Greenwich

Book Description

East Greenwich, the eighth-oldest town in the state, was named for the original Greenwich in Kent County, England. The eastern edge rests on the Narragansett Bay, and the western land gracefully rises up four picturesque hills. Originally owned by the Narragansett Indians, the territory was acquired by King Charles II in 1644. It was incorporated as a town on October 13, 1677, when the Rhode Island General Assembly granted land to men who served during King Philip's War. The town's sheltered cove nurtured a thriving seaport community, and successful boatbuilding, rope making, and fishing industries emerged. Inhabitants of the western part of the village focused on farming, and a prosperous textile industry lasted until the end of World War II. East Greenwich Historic Cemetery Inscriptions

Book Description

East Greenwich, RI, was chartered by the Colony of Rhode Island in 1677, and the earliest surviving gravestone marks the 1718 death of 27 year old Ann (Greene) Tillinghast, wife of John. There are about 80 historic cemeteries, containing 4600 gravestones and over 7,100 inscriptions. The inscriptions are listed individually, each with a code which identifies the cemetery in which they are located. There is a map of the town showing the location of each cemetery, followed by an individual listing of each cemetery, with directions and a map of the cemetery itself, showing where each stone is located. Gravestones recorded in 1892 by James N. Arnold, but which are missing today, are also listed. Finally, there is a full alphabetical index of all the inscriptions, including women under their maiden name if known. This volume is a model for how to best present this information. Highly recommended.
