Benjamin Franklin Cheatham was a Nashville native and a descendant of the city's founder, James Robertson. Born in 1820, he achieved fame through his military service in the Mexican War and, especially, the Civil War. After the war Cheatham farmed, ran for Congress, and, at the time of his death in 1866, was postmaster of Nashville. Cheatham was one of Nashville's most popular sons, and his funeral, which drew some thirty thousand people, was reportedly the largest ever held in the city.

A common soldier's story, of the men fighting to defend Confederate interests at Vicksburg in late 1862 through July 1863. Using a number of letters home, reminiscences, records and diaries kept during the long hours in the hot and filthy 'ditches', it presents a story of sacrifice and adaptability, of boredom and submission to inevitability.

Excerpt from The East Tennessee Campaign, September, 1863 Chattanooga, the objective point of the campaign, was, in strategic importance, of more value to the Confederates than any other point that had surrendered to our victorious arms, with the possible exception of Vicksburg, for it was the key to the interior of the Confederacy, the converging point of the two greatest lines of railway that bore the Con federate supply trains to its armies in the East. It was the citadel of Georgia, the gateway to the South, thrown open by the prowess of the Army of the Cumberland, and held open by. The courage and brawn of its stalwart soldiers until the leisurely march of reinforcements enabled them to beat back the envious spectators of their occupancy of the stronghold, from the-heights of Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge. Like every other red-blooded American, East Tennessee residents did all they could to help end World War II. Locals like "Petie" Siler signed up for service, despite having fought in World War I. Oak Ridge residents worked expeditiously on the Manhattan Project, gathering uranium-235 to fuel the first atomic bomb. Knoxville's Rohm & Haas Chemical Company branch furnished Plexiglas for aircraft. Military veterans Dewaine A. Speaks and Dr. Ray Clift detail the unified sacrifices and contributions of East Tennessee's honorable soldiers and civilians.

Excerpt from East Tennessee and the Civil War The object of the author in preparing this work was twofold: First, to rescue from oblivion certain important historical facts, fast fading from the memory of men, con nected with the struggle in East Tennessee from 1861 to 1865; secondly, to vindicate the course of the Union peo ple of East Tennessee in separating from their friends and kindred in the South, and in adhering to the National Government. Their constancy and fortitude, their trials and sufi'erings ror what they deemed right, have no paral lel in the history of this country. To present these in connected and permanent form it is believed will add a new and missing chapter to the history of the great drama known as the Civil War.
