The year 2016 marks the 25th anniversary of the official inauguration of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), a free association of sovereign states comprised by Russia and 11 other republics that were formerly part of the Soviet Union. Although this loose association of states may not exist as a fixed-entity on the globe, it is believed that this bloc of countries will continue to build upon the various separate regions in the former Soviet space in the coming decade. This book provides a regional analysis and a country scan of the CIS regional block economies. It examines its history since the breakup of the formal Soviet Union and the formation of the CIS bloc, including creation of regional agreements such as the CIS Free Trade Area and the Eurasian Economic Union, which now represents more than 180 million people. As a whole, our text attempts to better understand current, and future, prospects for economic growth in the region, as well as their individual national challenges.

Updated from the 1995 edition, examines 27 countries in central and eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and central Asia, which is considered a unified region because of its heritage of communism and Russian hegemony and its current experience of economic and political upheaval. Part one contains 12 articles on different aspects of the region as a whole, ranging from political and economic issues to environmental and social surveys. For each state, the second section provides articles on the geography, history, and economy. A directory presents the constitution and data on the government, media, religion, finance, trade and industry, culture, education, the environment, defense, energy, and social welfare. A map, chronology, statistical survey, and bibliography are also included. The third part offers biographical profiles of over 250 important political figures in the region. No index. Rein Mullerson was Deputy Foreign Minister of Estonia during the country's independence struggles and is a distinguished professor of international relations. His book is concerned with the interplay of international law and politics in the changing international system. He analyses events in Eastern Europe and the former USSR to throw light on broad and controversial issues including non-use of force, non-interference in internal affairs, self-determination of peoples, minorities and nationalism in inter-ethnic conflicts and human rights in post-totalitarian societies. Controversial questions of continuity and succession of states and their recognition are also set in this context. One purpose of the book is to show how recent developments influence the international system as a whole and how international law has to change in order to respond to new challenges.
