Human and Industrial Efficiency (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Human and Industrial Efficiency The chief reason for submitting a special preface to the American Edition is to indicate as clearly as possible that this little book is as much American in origin and character as British. In other words, the reader will speedily recognize the deep indebtedness of the writer to American authors, and sources of both material and inspiration. Following upon a visit to the United States (where he lectured in 1913), the author never forgot the first impressions of the amazing efficiency displayed on all hands by Americans of all grades of society, and pledged himself after investigating these, to endeavour to establish some of these principles of human action in England upon his return. Equality and Efficiency REV

Book Description

Originally published in 1975, Equality and Efficiency: The Big Tradeoff is a very personal work from one of the most important macroeconomists of the last hundred years. And this new edition includes "Further Thoughts on Equality and Efficiency," a paper published by the author two years later. In classrooms Arthur M. Okun may be best remembered for Okun's Law, but his lasting legacy is the respect and admiration he earned from economists, practitioners, and policymakers. Equality and Efficiency is the perfect embodiment of that legacy, valued both by professional economists and those readers with a keen interest in social policy. To his fellow economists, Okun presents messages, in the form of additional comments and select citations, in his footnotes. To all readers, Okun presents an engaging dual theme: the market needs a place, and the market needs to be kept in its place. As Okun puts it: Institutions in a capitalist democracy prod us to get ahead of our neighbors economically after telling us to stay in line socially. This double standard professes and pursues an egalitarian political and social system while simultaneously generating gaping disparities in economic well-being. Today, Okun's dual theme feels incredibly prescient as we grapple with the hot-button topic of income inequality. In his foreword, Lawrence H. Summers declares: On what one might think of as questions of "economic philosophy," I doubt that Okun has been improved on in the subsequent interval. His discussion of how societies rely on rights as well as markets should be required reading for all young economists who are enamored with market solutions to all problems. With a new foreword by Lawrence H. Summers

Psychology and Industrial Efficiency (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Psychology and Industrial Efficiency Clear, concrete illustrations which demonstrate the possibilities of the new method. In the follow ing pages, accordingly, it will be my aim to ana lyze the results of experiments which have actu ally been carried out, experiments belonging to many different spheres of economic life. But these detached experiments ought always at least to point to a connected whole; the single experiments will, therefore, always need a general discussion of the principles as a background. In the interest of such a wider perspective we may at first enter into some preparatory questions of theory. They may serve as an introduction which is to lead us to the actual economic life and the present achievements of experimental psychology. Reprint of Reports of the Commission on Economy and Efficiency

Book Description

Excerpt from Reprint of Reports of the Commission on Economy and Efficiency: Regarding Outlines of Organization of the Government November 27, 1911. The President: The Commission on Economy and Efficiency has the honor to submit the following report on the organization of the Government of the United States as it existed July 1, 1911. This report has been prepared with two definite objects in view, (1) to secure and present the information that is essential for any detailed critical study of the manner in which the Government is organized, and (2) to furnish this information in such a way that it can be kept constantly revised to date, with little or no expense, and thus be at all times available to officers of the Government for use in the current administration of public affairs. Introduction. At the outset of its work the commission was impressed with the fact that the Congress, the President, and the administrative officers were attempting to discharge the duties with which they are intrusted without sufficient knowledge regarding the instrumentalities through which these duties are to be performed. While it is true that officers of bureaus, divisions, etc., have information regarding the organization of their services, it is only in exceptional cases that such information has been compiled in a form to be readily available to others. Each service consequently has had to conduct its affairs without adequate knowledge regarding conditions elsewhere, and the higher administrative officers have been without the information so imperative to the exercise of real administrative control and direction. Desirable as it may be that special efforts should be put forth from time to time to better governmental conditions, improvement and reform that is really worth while and lasting can be secured only by the adoption and current use of devices that enable administrators, from day to day, to pass judgment upon the effectiveness of the machinery and methods by which they are managing the affairs intrusted to them. In the same way that the commission is recommending, through other reports, that the accounting system of the Government be modified so that the information developed by the recording of financial transactions will be currently available for use by those in authority, it is also recommending, through the present report, the adoption of a plan by which any officer of the Government will be able to know, at any time, exactly the manner in which the service in which he is interested is organized. Economics in One Lesson

Book Description

With over a million copies sold, Economics in One Lesson is an essential guide to the basics of economic theory. A fundamental influence on modern libertarianism, Hazlitt defends capitalism and the free market from economic myths that persist to this day. Considered among the leading economic thinkers of the “Austrian School,” which includes Carl Menger, Ludwig von Mises, Friedrich (F.A.) Hayek, and others, Henry Hazlitt (1894-1993), was a libertarian philosopher, an economist, and a journalist. He was the founding vice-president of the Foundation for Economic Education and an early editor of The Freeman magazine, an influential libertarian publication. Hazlitt wrote Economics in One Lesson, his seminal work, in 1946. Concise and instructive, it is also deceptively prescient and far-reaching in its efforts to dissemble economic fallacies that are so prevalent they have almost become a new orthodoxy. Economic commentators across the political spectrum have credited Hazlitt with foreseeing the collapse of the global economy which occurred more than 50 years after the initial publication of Economics in One Lesson. Hazlitt’s focus on non-governmental solutions, strong — and strongly reasoned — anti-deficit position, and general emphasis on free markets, economic liberty of individuals, and the dangers of government intervention make Economics in One Lesson every bit as relevant and valuable today as it has been since publication.
