eCulture, the final utopia

Computational culture --eCulture-- has so far been considered as a set of more or less loose traits and phenomena that part of the humanity (those over 30 years old) does not try to understand ("it is too difficult to apprehend -- and besides, it works") while the other half, the younger ones, who were born inside this new culture, blanketed by it and who tend to think of it as "natural given", do not feel the urge to fully understand, neither. "Virtual reality gives me this, the algorithms give me that, what else there is to it?" eCulture, however, has become dense and rich enough to be considered as a language, with its units of meaning -- both at the level of its visible figures or significants and at the level of the meaning each one of them conveys. It is a language just as film and English are languages. If humanity does not break the code of this language as an overall and comprehensive tool to represent the world, therefore failing to use it according to its own will and needs, this new language will speak the human being, will express itself through the human being, instead of being spoken by humanity. This book suggests the way to consider eCulture as a language and chooses as an instrument of analysis a convergence between the Humanities (philosophy, arts and culture) and the "hard sciences".

Television has long been a symbol of social and cultural decay, yet many in postwar Europe saw it as the medium with the greatest potential to help build a new society and create a new form of audiovisual art. Utopian Television examines works of the great filmmakers Roberto Rossellini, Peter Watkins, and Jean-Luc Godard, all of whom looked to television as a promising new medium even while remaining critical of its existing practices. Postcolonial Gateways and Walls


Book Description

Metaphors are ubiquitously used in the humanities to bring the tangibility of the concrete world to the elaboration of abstract thought. Drawing on this cognitive function of metaphors, this collection of essays focuses on the evocative figures of the ‘gateway’ and the ‘wall’ to reflect on the state of postcolonial studies. Some chapters – on such topics as maze-making in Canada and the Berlin Wall in the writings of New Zealand authors – foreground the modes of articulation between literal borders and emotional (dis)connections, while others examine how artefacts ranging from personal letters to clothes may be conceptualized as metaphorical ‘gateways’ and ‘walls’ that lead or, conversely, regulate access, to specific forms of cultural expression and knowledge. Following this line of metaphorical thought, postcolonial studies itself may be said to function as either barrier or pathway to further modes of enquiry. This much is suggested by two complementary sets of contributions: on the one hand, those that contend that the canonical centre-periphery paradigm and the related ‘writing back’ model have prevented scholars from recognizing the depth and magnitude of cross-cultural influences between civilizations; on the other, those that argue that the scope of traditional postcolonial models may be fruitfully widened to include territories such as post-imperial Turkey, a geographical and cultural gateway between East and West that features in several of the essays included in this collection. Ultimately, all of the contributions testify to the fact that postcolonial studies is a field whose borders must be constantly redrawn, and whose paradigms need to be continually reshaped and rebuilt to remain relevant in the contemporary world – in other words, the collection’s varied approaches suggest that the discipline itself is permanently ‘under construction’. Readers are, therefore, invited to perform a critical inspection of the postcolonial construction site. A Rhetoric of Meanings

This book presents an in-depth analysis of language’s role as the tool and environment for human survival on Earth, examining its ability to provide an unlimited space for telling individual stories that bear the knowledge of mankind’s self-significance. The book is the result of a 20-year-long composite study of language phenomenology grounded in the interactions of Bulgarian and English, approached in a game-like fashion where the play with language units transcends levels of meanings based on significances, and explored through the four basic avatars of activated language: the learner, the teacher, the translator and the creator of texts. The book is divided into three sections: the first details the motivation for this study and the design of the method of exploration. This is followed by an application of this method to the talkative web in order to find ways of meeting the enormous demand for human content. The final section brings together the colourful practices of activated language movement. This book is not about the philosophy of language, per se. It is concerned with the practical field beyond the philosophy of language where the self-identification of the Subject is brought to a higher stage of communicative creativity. The rhetoric theory of argumentation is argued throughout the book to be the relevant ground for building a holistic tool of language learning where language acquisition is seen as the capability of the subject to construct worlds in a universe whose leading structure involves the rhetoric criteria of ethos, pathos and logos, on the one hand, and the self-identifying choice of meanings to situations of complex nature, on the other. As such, the book is primarily concerned with linguistics, rhetoric, semiotics of culture, ethics and language learning, viewed through a philosophical preoccupation with humanity.
