Effects of Math Interventions on Elementary Students' Math Skills

Over 20% of public school students are in need of additional math support. For this reason, it is crucial that schools utilize the most effective math interventions to help improve student outcomes. Meta-analytic procedures were conducted in order to evaluate the effectiveness of hierarchical math interventions used to improve math skills. Results suggested that math fluency interventions were more effective than math acquisition interventions in improving student basic math skills. Furthermore, generalization interventions were found to have a greater effect on word problem-solving skills compared to math fluency and math acquisition interventions. These results suggest that math fluency interventions are effective in improving basic math skills. However, generalization interventions are currently the most effective method when improving specific higher order math skills. Practical implications of these results are also discussed.

Effects of Math Intervention Curriculum by a Computer Based Program by Eighth Grade Middle School Students with Learning Disabilities

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of implementing a math intervention curriculum supported by a computer based program for 81h grade students with learning disabilities. All students were significantly below grade level in math and received instruction in a Special Day Class. Students spent 12 weeks utilizing both the piloted math intervention curriculum supported by the computer based programs prior to state testing. A student survey was shared on how students felt using both programs and if they felt it had improved their math skills. Results of the program were compared to the pretest and post test results collected by the computer based program. Using a state adopted structured math intervention resulted in better retention of skills as well as more engagement in activities. The Impact of Three Math Interventions on Number Fact Knowledge Among Elementary School Students

This study examined the impact of three math interventions on students with lower math abilities (LMA) in connection to their ability to gain number fact knowledge. Grade level was also used as a variable. Sixty-five students in Grades 2-6 participated in one of the following three interventions: drill-and-practice, strategy instruction and peer-mediated practice. At the end of 10 weeks, participants completed a number fact test that consisted of addition and multiplication statements. ANOVAs were used to analyze the results for each research question. Results demonstrated that the three interventions had no significant interaction effect on the number fact knowledge gained by the students with LMA. As well, students with LMA and without LMA benefitted equally from the interventions. It was also found that there was no significant interaction between the grade of the student and the intervention used. However, all students benefitted from all three interventions.
