The fact is that when I commenced the first chapter, my only purpose was to direct attention to the attractions of a winter residence in Egypt, of spring in Syria, and summer on the Bosphorus. As I proceeded, however, I could not fail to remember, what many persons now appear to forget, that Palestine and Syria form part of Asiatic Turkey, and are justly entitled to whatever privileges the convention between Great Britain and the Porte may in the future bring to Asia Minor.
