Eight Months on the Gran Chaco of the Argentine Republic (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Eight Months on the Gran Chaco of the Argentine Republic The present work is neither literary nor scientific. It is a plain account of what I saw, or believed I saw, in the Chaco, and of some of the feelings I experienced. I would not seek to em bellish my tale, even had I the power, for fear of diminishing the faith of the reading public, which already seems to be small, in the narratives of travellers. It is not for the purpose of excusing the many defects of the book that I add that every page has been written in snatches, if I may so express myself, in the rare intervals of leisure afforded me by the exercise of my profession, and almost always in country places, where, all the world over, there are few conveniences for writing. Hence a polished style was my least consideration. I therefore rely on the reader's indulgence, and I shall feel rewarded, if he thinks me an attentive observer and a faithful narrator.
