Elementary Geography

Book Description

Excerpt from Elementary Geography: Designed for Primary and Intermediate Classes The Indians and hunters who catch animals for their fur live a great deal in the forests. Often there are no roads to guide them. Sometimes it is very cloudy, and they cannot see the sun. They are said to have a very curious way of finding out then where the north is. Moss grows best in shady places, and generally grows thickest on the north side of the trunks of trees, because the sun does not shine much on that side. The hunters and Indians, therefore, look to see which side of the trees is covered with moss. They know that the mossy side is the north side. The moss is to them as good a friend as the compass needle to the sailor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Elementary Geography

Book Description

Excerpt from Elementary Geography: A Text-Book for Children Children naturally prefer types to generalities; there fore a lesson is devoted to a typical mountain, river, coast-line, and valley, in place of general descriptions of such natural objects. Children are also fond of the personal element and the story form; for this reason a real teacher and real classes are employed in the text. For the same reason the style in Part IV, or in the journeys, is that of the traveller telling his experiences. This method of presentation will be found to help the memory wonderfully, because inter est is enlisted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
