Hence all unnecessary details have been omitted, and matter of secondary importance has been put in small type or in the notes. The introductory chapter on definitions of grammatical terms has been inserted in the hope that it may relieve the teacher of German of the time - consuming task of teaching the first elements of English grammar. It is hoped that the questions on the various topics may prove a valuable aid in impressing all important points upon the student's mind. The suggested exercises can and ought to be multiplied and varied by the teacher, to give the stu dent not merely a theoretical but also a practical knowledge of German grammar. Excerpt from Elements of German Grammar The method of using the book is too plain to require long explanation; and the principal steps of general method are given under How to learn a foreign language. The grammatical part will be found to contain all that is needed for a class of beginners, and no time need be wasted in dictating grammar notes. The amount of grammar practice must be left to the teacher, who will do well to refer to the matter given as frequently as possible. Certainly instruction in German is a waste of time without some solid knowledge of grammar, unless the object is merely to acquire a small stock of conversational phrases. The answers to the questions are easy to find; and as there are over eight hundred of them, the teacher and the student are at liberty to select the easiest for a first semester, adding the rest when repeating, and supplementing them by as many more as may be feasible. In many cases the answers, when put together, will be found to form a tolerable composition on the subject of the questionaire.
