The Elements of Railroad Engineering (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Elements of Railroad Engineering A railroad with its rolling stock and buildings constitutes a manufacturing plant which its owners operate in the manufacture and sale of transportation. The "layout" or arrangement of a modem manufacturing plant is as much an item of design as is each individual machine or process. This book attempts to describe the fixed portion of a railroad plant and to give the underlying principles of the design of its layout. A policy adopted in the preparation of the book has been to treat briefly and generally those subjects which are fully and well covered in special volumes, to which the student is referred, and to go into detail in those subjects treated only in books of the same class as this one. An effort has been made to indicate at least indirectly that there are other methods of doing things than those presented, and to lead the student or reader to think of other possible ways than those described in the book. The plan of first describing the thing and then discussing its design, has been followed. Part I describes the permanent way in as much detail as has been thought wise; Part II discusses the fundamental principles governing the design of the grade line, while Part III describes the methods of applying these principles to secure the most economical location and construction. Part III also contains many suggestions which would have been most welcome to the author when he was placed in charge of his first residency. Railroad Construction (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Railroad Construction This book had its beginning in some notes on railroad con struction which were first prepared about twenty-five years ago and were issued in mimeograph form for the use of students in the College of Civil Engineering at Cornell University. These notes have required frequent revision in order to keep them abreast of ever changing practice, but so much has been done in the last few years in the direction of standardizing construction that the time now seems opportune for enlarging them into a book, for general use. The discussions in engineering associations and in the technical papers have done much to stimulate interest and develop effort. They have also tended to standardize practice by suggesting to each engineer the adoption of the good features of the standards of other railroads, which were improvements upon and applicable to his own road. The method adopted by the American Railway Engineering Association of assigning topics to committees for investigation and report, the report to be presented at the annual convention for general discussion, has accomplished much in this direction. In this work an attempt has been made to present to the reader glimpses of the field and to impress upon him something of the spirit of the work. Railway Construction (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Railway Construction The construction and maintenance of a railway calls for the application of so many branches of engineering that several volumes would be required to do ample justice to a subject so comprehensive and ever-extending. To avoid attempting so wide a range, the object of the following pages has been to describe briefly some of the recognized leading features which regulate railway construction, and to assist the explanation with sketches of works selected from actual practice. Where the number of existing good examples is legion, it is somewhat difficult to make a choice for illustration, and the course adopted has been to select such samples of structures as appear best to elucidate in a simple manner the different types of work under consideration. In the drawings and diagrams many important minor details are necessarily omitted, partly to avoid complexity, but principally to leave more prominent the leading features of the particular piece of work referred to in the description. Some of the sketches of the large span bridges and large span roofs are only shown in outline; but, as their principal dimensions are given, a general idea can be obtained of their actual proportions. No allusion is made to the requisite strengths of the various structures described, nor to the necessary dimensions of the materials used in their construction, as this would necessitate the introduction of a vast amount of mathematical formulae which does not come under the province of the object in view, and which the engineer has already at command from his training and works of reference.
