Book Description

Josiah Ellsworth was born in 1629 in Eelstown, Cambridge, England. He married Elizabeth Holcombe, daughter of Thomas Holcombe and Elizabeth Ferguson, in 1654 in Windsor, Connecticut. They had nine children. He died in 1689. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Connecticut, Pennsylvania New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Kentucky.

Christopher Elsworth (1625-ca. 1715) was born at Bristol, England, the son of Sir Christopher and Lucia Bower Elsworth. An English Quaker, he fled to the Netherlands at the time of Oliver Cromwell. There he met and married Jannetje Jans at Amsterdam in 1747. They had eight children, 1649-1670. The family immigrated to America in 1652 and settled at New Amsterdam (New York). Record chiefly follows line of descent to Ira Ellsworth of the eighth generation. Ira Ellsworth (1888-1931) was born at Elkader, Iowa, the son of Earl Ellsworth (1855-1879). He married Laura Ellen Jackson (1894-1982), daughter of Lester and Ida McIntosh Jackson, in 1910 at Waterloo, Iowa. They moved to Mason City, Iowa, soon after their marriage. They had nine children, 1911-1929. The family moved to Kansas City, Missouri, ca. 1917 and back to Waterloo, Iowa, in 1925, then ca. 1929 to Ovid, Colorado. He died at Ovid in 1931. Descendants listed lived in Iowa, California, and elsewhere.
