This Is Awkward

Book Description

Don’t waste your awkwardness. The most difficult subjects in our lives are also the ones that we find most uncomfortable to talk about: divorce, body image, sexuality, pornography, or depression. Our awkward silence reveals the gap that exists between what we are and what we know we should be. But God loves those awkward moments, Sammy Rhodes argues, because they are precisely where we find connection with God and one another. In This Is Awkward, Rhodes talks directly, honestly, hilariously about the most painfully uncomfortable subjects in our lives. In chapters like “Parents Are a Gift (You Can’t Return Them)” and “The Porn in My Side,” he boldly goes where most of us fear to tread, revealing that we can be liberated by the embrace of a God who knows the most shameful things about us and loves us all the same. Because nothing is too awkward for God.

Uncomfortable

Book Description

Does your church make you uncomfortable? It’s easy to dream about the “perfect” church—a church that sings just the right songs set to just the right music before the pastor preaches just the right sermon to a room filled with just the right mix of people who happen to agree with you on just about everything. Chances are your church doesn’t quite look like that. But what if instead of searching for a church that makes us comfortable, we learned to love our church, even when it’s challenging? What if some of the discomfort that we often experience is actually good for us? This book is a call to embrace the uncomfortable aspects of Christian community, whether that means believing difficult truths, pursuing difficult holiness, or loving difficult people—all for the sake of the gospel, God’s glory, and our joy.

Embracing Awkward

Book Description

As humans, most of us try to avoid awkward as much as possible. Right? Very few of us enjoy being uncomfortable or not knowing what to expect. Uncertainty often brings us anxiety and fear. Awkward has some of its roots in uncertainty. We don't know what is expected of us, or what someone else will think of us, or how someone else will respond to something - or even how we'll respond to something or feel about something - any of those instances of uncertainty can leave the door wide open to awkwardness. It can feel really scary being in the not knowing. It can feel quite threatening to just be our authentic selves and let the awkward fall where it may. How do you think it feels to take the chance of saying or doing something, and not knowing how it will turn out? Scary? Exciting? Do you realize that those two things can feel very similar? Awkwardness has some of its roots in being different than what we perceive is expected of us. When we choose to forge our own path, to be true to ourselves in spite of differing expectations of our families, our friends, and society in general, that can feel super awkward. We don't know how we'll be received. Again, uncertainty. Fear. We so often try to pretend, try to put on a brave face or act like we feel happy or strong or okay - not disappointed, or afraid, or angry, or not okay. It's exhausting, don't you think? When our authentic selves have had enough of the pretenses and demand to be free, there's likely going to be some awkward - and that's okay! What I have learned over the years, is that awkward is where a lot of the good stuff in life is! Awkward can be where we find funny. Vulnerable. Touching. Poignant. Authentic relating. Heart-opening connection. Strength. And other delicious morsels of human life. The ability to stand in awkwardness, however we manage to do it, is a doorway into allowing ourselves to create our own authentic, sacred lives, to truly pursue our dreams and all of those things we long for. So, I choose awkward. In this book, I share a collection of my writings that spans almost 30 years. Some of it is directly about embracing awkward. Most of it is just talking openly about subjects that have made me feel awkward in my life - body image, fat liberation, authenticity, self-love, self-acceptance, anger, intimacy, relationships, sexuality. I find that as I move into these topics and share my authentic thoughts and feelings, the awkwardness and fear dissolve. This is just me. I own it. I hold myself sacred.

Beyond Awkward

Book Description

We love to share good news with the world—a great restaurant, a coveted promotion, a new baby—and that makes us evangelists for many things. So why don't we do the same with Jesus? Simply put, talking about Jesus is awkward. Yet when we brave the awkwardness, we see God work. Beau Crosetto helps us move out of our comfort zones and beyond the awkwardness to share the life-transforming power of God with others.
