Eminent British Statesmen, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Eminent British Statesmen, Vol. 2 IN giving the lives of the most prominent actors upon the great and awful stage of the Old English Revolution, the Author has thought himself justified in departing from the system observed by his pre decessors, and, instead of the numerous individual sketches that, under other circumstances, are all that is necessary, devoting awhole volume at a time to but two or three of those eventful biographies which include the histories of minor contemporaries, and, indeed, the history of the age itself. For the times, awful as they were, were scarcely greater than the men - the ideas of both present them selves to us at once, like shadowy and solid giants standing together, and hardly letting us discern which leads the other. Lives of Eminent British Statesmen, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Lives of Eminent British Statesmen, Vol. 2 The life of Eliot is the first that has appeared. He did not survive to be an actor in the scene dur ing the most obvious part of the great contest; and posterity has been so much occupied with those who did, that they are startled when they have leisure to look back, and see these older and not less noble shapes of its commencement, these less bodily, yet hardly less visible, demi-gods, - whovi preface. Lives of Eminent British Statesmen, Vol. 5 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Lives of Eminent British Statesmen, Vol. 5 I have said, of one of the statesmen whose lives occupy this volume, that he was neither a'hero nor a genius; and the same remark is applicable to the other. This want of a distinctive character, nay, even the absence of fanaticism, political or religious, has greatly augmented my difficulty in writing, and will probably lessen the interest in reading, the Lives of Cecil and Danby. Eminent British Statesmen, Vol. 4 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Eminent British Statesmen, Vol. 4 Tms volume completes that portion of the series which relates to the statesmen of the English commonwealth. The subjects have been selected with reference to the various stages in the struggle, from the opposition in the reign of James to the breaking out of the civil war, and thence to the execution of Charles, the usurp ation of Cromwell, and the resumption of power by the republicans on the abdication of his son. The prin cipal and greatest person who adhered to Charles has not been omitted. Four lives, out of the six, are here written in a detached shape for the first time for, though few have been able todispute the celebrated saying of bishop Warburton, that, at the period they illustrate, the spirit of liberty was at its height in this country, and its interests were conducted and supported by a set of the greatest geniuses for government that the world ever saw embarked together in one common cause, the number of those who have troubled themselves to in quire into the reason or precise value of this saying have been fewer still. It is surely a grave reproach to English political biography, that the attention so richly due to the statesmen who opposed Charles the First, in themselves the most remarkable men of any age or nation, should have been suffered to be borne away by the poorer imitators of their memorable deeds, the au thors of the imperfect settlement of 1688.
