EMP Protective Systems

Book Description

A representative electromagnetic pulse from a high altitude burst will typically have maximum field strengths near the ground on the order of 50 KV/meter and a time duration on the order of a microsecond and rise times on the order of 10 nanoseconds. Installation of EMP protective measures as a retrofit to existing installations is more costly that would have been required if included in the original design and construction. A basic approach for EMP protection of small city, county and State facilities includes containment of communications equipments in a minimus size, double layer galvanized steel wire mesh enclosure, with operators and hand sets adjacent to or remote from the shielded enclosure with connecting cables run in ferrous conduit with threaded couplings. Power cables should be contained in ferrous conduit and there should be a single panel entry of power, hand sets, control, and antenna cable conductors.

Electromagnetic Shielding and Corrosion Protection for Aerospace Vehicles

Book Description

In this book, original and comprehensive studies discuss shielding effectiveness as related to conductivity, and the relationship of material chemistry to conductivity and corrosion are demonstrated. It is explained how to optimize shielding effectiveness for aircraft and other vehicles. Electrically conductive corrosion prevention materials capable of maintaining EMI/EMP protection of aircraft and weapon systems are identified.

Protecting Electrical Equipment

Book Description

How do you protect electrical systems from high energy electromagnetic pulses? This book is designed for researchers who wish to design toughned systems against EMPs from high altitude sources. It discusses numerous factors affectíng the strength of EMPs as well as their impact on electronic components, devices and power electrical equipment. This book includes practical protection methods and means for evaluating their effectiveness.

E PRO Handbook IV: EMP

Book Description

The Electric Infrastructure Protection (EPRO®) Handbook Series provides peer-reviewed analysis, recommendations and practical, implementable best practices to help infrastructure owners and operators, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations bolster resilience against Black Sky hazards. This volume, EPRO® Handbook IV, "EPRO EMP," provides a compendium of best practices and cost-effective strategic options and specific approaches for EMP protection of critical elements of bulk power systems. Also included: emerging strategies, now in use by some of the world's largest and most advanced power companies, for black start and restoration planning compatible with lifeline infrastructure sustainment in extreme, complex catastrophe "Black Sky-class" scenarios. The Handbook was developed by and for U.S. and international power companies with new, supplemental research and state of the art protection methodology provided by EIS Council, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, Scientific Applications & Research Associates, CenterPoint Energy and a wide range of other power companies, research teams and partnering organizations.

Grounds for Grounding

Book Description

GROUNDS FOR GROUNDING The first book to cover grounding from the circuit to system and across the entire spectrum of applications Grounds for Grounding provides a complete and thorough approach to the subject of designing electrical and electronic circuits and systems, blending theory and practice to demonstrate how a few basic rules can be applied across a broad range of applications. The authors begin with the basic concepts of Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) that are essential for understanding grounding theory and its applications, such as “ground loop,” which is one of the most misunderstood concepts in EMC. Next, they provide an introduction to grounding, including safety grounding, grounding for control of electromagnetic interference, and grounding-related case studies. Subsequent chapter coverage includes: Fundamentals of grounding design Bonding principles Grounding for power distribution and lightning protection systems Grounding in wiring circuits and cable shields Grounding of EMI terminal protection devices Grounding on printed circuit boards Integrated facility and platform grounding system Practical case studies are integrated throughout the book to aid in readers’ comprehension and each chapter concludes with a useful bibliography. Grounds for Grounding is an indispensable resource for electrical and electronic engineers who work with the design of circuits, systems, and facilities.

Blackout Warfare

Book Description

"Blackout Warfare" is the term used in this report to describe a revolutionary new way of warfare planned by Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran that is still little understood in the United States, but poses an imminent and existential threat to Western Civilization. These potential adversaries plan to use cyber-attacks, sabotage, and electromagnetic pulse (EMP) weapons in combination to blackout national electric grids to achieve quick and decisive victory. Blackout Warfare that paralyzes the U.S. electric grid and other life-sustaining critical infrastructures--communications, transportation, natural gas and petroleum, business and industry, food and water infrastructures, and the military--could kill most Americans. The EMP Commission estimates up to 90% of the U.S. population could die from a nationwide blackout lasting one year. The military would be paralyzed by a nationwide blackout, as CONUS military bases depend for 99% of their electricity upon the civilian electric grid. For the first time in the West, this report fights back against looming catastrophe by thinking about and planning for Blackout Warfare the way our potential adversaries do.
