With some two million practitioners, engineers form one of America's largest professional groups; indeed, it is the single largest occupation of American males today. The rise of this profession and its place in American society provide the focus for this anthology. Spanning two centuries and the various subdisciplines of the field, these essays demonstrate the paradoxical role engineers have played in building (although usually not controlling) the infrastructure on which America's prosperity is based. This collection of seventeen essays traces the rise of the engineering profession and its evolving contribution to the development of America's material and economic success. Topics addressed include: *American engineering's birth from European traditions *Impact of science on engineering practice *Changing relationship between engineers and bureaucratic organizations *Growth of engineering professional institutions Thoughtfully organized and unique in its scope, this volume will be a welcome overview for both students and scholars of the history of technology. These essays were originally published in the journal Technology and Culture.

The American Dream - the idea that with hard work, anyone can be successful in any career – once drew thousands of immigrants to the United States. The country has given the world countless success stories in every sector of industry. But is that concept still true? Can you still make a decent living pursuing any career?Introducing Engineering America: Teaching a Penguin How to Fly, an 18-year-old's journey on discovering that not all college majors are created equal. The book combines the student's narrative with candid interviews of some of the nation's most accomplished individuals to discuss how engineering careers are becoming the trend of the century:Nobel Laureate in Physics Steven Weinberg,Roe v. Wade Lawyer Sarah Weddington, University of Texas Associate Professor Derek Chiou, Author Sheril Kirshenbaum, Economist and Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research Daniel Hamermesh. America has so much talent but not enough of it is pursuing STEM careers. This book hopes to prove to high school students, college underclassmen and anyone looking to create a new career that engineering is doable, needed, financially rewarding and of course, most importantly, “cool.”

Discover insider secrets of how America’s transportation system is designed, funded, and built – and how to make it work for your community In Confessions of a Recovering Engineer: Transportation for a Strong Town, renowned speaker and author of Strong Towns Charles L. Marohn Jr. delivers an accessible and engaging exploration of America’s transportation system, laying bare the reasons why it no longer works as it once did, and how to modernize transportation to better serve local communities. You’ll discover real-world examples of poor design choices and how those choices have dramatic and tragic effects on the lives of the people who use them. You’ll also find case studies and examples of design improvements that have revitalized communities and improved safety. This important book shows you: The values of the transportation professions, how they are applied in the design process, and how those priorities differ from those of the public. How the standard approach to transportation ensures the maximum amount of traffic congestion possible is created each day, and how to fight that congestion on a budget. Bottom-up techniques for spending less and getting higher returns on transportation projects, all while improving quality of life for residents. Perfect for anyone interested in why transportation systems work – and fail to work – the way they do, Confessions of a Recovering Engineer is a fascinating insider’s peek behind the scenes of America’s transportation systems.

Mechanical engineering is critical to the design, manufacture, and operation of small and large mechanical systems throughout the U.S. economy. This book highlights the main findings of a benchmarking exercise to rate the standing of U.S. mechanical engineering basic research relative to other regions or countries. The book includes key factors that influence U.S. performance in mechanical engineering research, and near- and longer-term projections of research leadership. U.S. leadership in mechanical engineering basic research overall will continue to be strong. Contributions of U.S. mechanical engineers to journal articles will increase, but so will the contributions from other growing economies such as China and India. At the same time, the supply of U.S. mechanical engineers is in jeopardy, because of declines in the number of U.S. citizens obtaining advanced degrees and uncertain prospects for continuing to attract foreign students. U.S. funding of mechanical engineering basic research and infrastructure will remain level, with strong leadership in emerging areas.

Excerpt from The American Engineers in France This book is not intended to be a history or detailed account of the work done by American Engineers in France. Their work was so extensive and so varied as to put the writing of its record beyond the powers of one man, for none could know it all. It is hoped that some day the record will be properly set forth in justice to the men and for the honor of the profession, but it will be of necessity the joint product of several collaborating authors. The first contribution that America made to the Allied cause was the raising of nine regiments of engineers, with one of which the author served. It is their work that is the motif of this book. In the writing, it has been necessary to touch on all the fields of engineer activity, because these regiments came in contact with every field, even if they did not invade each one, from constructing ports to digging and holding trenches, in all parts of France from the Atlantic to the Vosges, from the Mediterranean to Flanders. Consequently there results a brief outline of what all engineers did. Perhaps, it may serve to give those who did not go overseas a picture of what is meant by engineering in modern war. There will not be found any description of spectacular or dazzling pieces of construction like so many structures in civil works that arouse admiration. There was none such. Military engineering consists in doing things in the simplest and quickest way, where permanency in character and accuracy in execution yield to the imperious demands for results that are immediately available regardless of all other considerations.
