Excerpt from Evaluacion De Tierras Y Recursos Para La Planeacion Nacional En Las Zonas Tropicales: Land and Resource Evaluation for National Planning in the Tropics; An International Conference and Workshop, Chetumal, Mexico, January 25-31, 1988 The logo we have chosen for the conference is a jigsaw puzzle in various phases of completion. The palm fronds, of course, represent the tropics and the globe, the international aspects of the meeting. The fact that we chose a puzzle has particular significance. All too often, we, in our functional professions foresters, agriculturalists, wildlife managers), look at our lands and resources in a very narrow perspective. For national planning, foresters, for example, often look at only forested lands. Recommendations for a forestry program are often based on this perception. In reality, these lands may represent a small portion (or a small piece of a large puzzle) of a base from which one could develop a timber management program. Foresters should be interested not only in lands that are currently forested, but also in those lands that were once forested but are no longer so and in lands that have never been forested but could be. Similar analogies can be made for each of the land and resource management activities. Unfortunately the problem does not end there. This long-needed book highlights how traditional Mexican agriculture has changed according to environmental, climatic, geographical, social and cultural conditions. Grounded in archaeological-historical data from interrelated research of various scientific disciplines, the book also draws on studies made by anthropologists of varied small-scale agricultural groups. Traditional Mexican Agriculture is the result of a holistic study of Mexican agriculture. It offers the reader a perspective of traditional agriculture in Mexico from social, cultural and ecological Anthropology, Ethnology, regional and environmental History, and Agroecology, to help obtain sustainable agroecology where human societies obtain better ways of life and a healthy and nutritious food system. The book further aims to recover ideas, management, and components of local knowledge of small-scale farmers. Pitched at university students and academics, as well as researchers and developers of agricultural matters, this book will be ideal reading at agrarian universities and related institutions. It provides a basis for future studies in sustainable agricultural systems in this region.
