Discovered as a typewritten manuscript only after her death in 2006, Family of Earth allows us to see into the young mind of author and Appalachian native Wilma Dykeman (1920–2006), who would become one of the American South's most prolific and storied writers. Focusing on her childhood in Buncombe County, Dykeman reveals a perceptive and sophisticated understanding of human nature, the environment, and social justice. And yet, for her words' remarkable polish, her voice still resonates as raw and vital. Against the backdrop of early twentieth-century life in Asheville, she chronicles the touching, at times harrowing, story of her family's fortunes, plotting their rise and fall in uncertain economic times and ending with her father's sudden death in 1934 when she was fourteen years old. Featuring a new foreword by fellow North Carolinian Robert Morgan, Family of Earth stands as a new major literary work by a groundbreaking author.

This book is dedicated to my husband, Robert, my sons, Shane and DeJuan, my granddaughter, Shayla, my mother and step-father, Carrie and Timothy Conley, my brothers, Loade, Jr., Sylvester, in his loving memory, Jimmy, Donell, and Dr. Jerry Johnson, my church family of World Deliverance Temple, and my two best friends, Doris and Mina. At times it is difficult to put your feelings in words and verbally express them. Poems On Occasion serves as an outlet to express my inner feelings when coping with difficult and stressful situations, as well as an instrument to reveal and share the sentiments of my heart with others. The contents of the poems in this book are written to be useful in assisting you when looking for just the "right words" to say when occasions occur in your life. During most of my lifetime I have been the type of person who would have something to say, but for whatever reason, I was fearful and would not speak up and say it. I have withheld within myself natural and spiritual knowledge that I should have shared with others. Realizing that God did not give us the spirit of fear, I prayerfully submitted this concern into his hands, and I truthfully believe that Poems On Occasion has been given to me as a gift from God to be used as a tool to express myself without being fearful, as well as being a blessing to others in the process. Upon reading some of the poems I had written, I began receiving requests from my fellow church members to compose poems for various occasions to be held at our church. Before writing each poem I pray and ask God to give me the words he wants me to say. God is an awesome God. It always amazes me to experience how the words flow within my head. Many times I am awaken out of my sleep as I hear the words being given to me in answer to a prayer for a poem that I need to write. In obedience to the Holy Spirit, I arise and write the words down, and after putting all my thoughts together, a poem is born.
