During the period from 1974 to the present an intense effort has been made to assimilate data from previous studies and to generate new and pertinent data regarding the lake and the factors which affect the management of the lake's water level. This Management Study is based on that data as well as input provided In; private citizens, neighboring landowners, and other interested parties. Additionally, policies written and unwritten which have evolved through the years have been considered in this project. The tenent of this Management Study is that the lake level must be so managed to reduce flood frequencies and durations, enhance wildlife habitat, maintain and support outdoor recreation. Opportunities, and preserve the lake's natural integrity for the combined best interest of the citizens of North Carolina, their visitors, the lake's neighbors, and the landowners along the canals which drain the lake water.
