"The two reports published here contain elements which contribute substantially to this broader spectrum of Southwestern cultural change. While primarily descriptive in nature, these two site reports, one from the western Kayenta area and one from the margin of the Mesa Verde area and the eastern Kayenta, suggest that the changes which occurred in the more centralized portions of these regions were directly related to what happened on the margins. That, while the site densities and population aggregates may not have been as high, the same factors affected these marginal areas. That conclusion could be expected, but what may not be expected is the differential response which appears to have occurred. After reading these two reports, it appears that it may be possible to discern elements of change in these fringe areas that, once defined, will provide new insight into what happened and why and in what are presently the better known areas of the Southwest. Charles Kendrick Colver was born 22 May 1821 in Clarendon, Vermont, the son of Dr. Nathaniel and Sally Clark Colver. He married Esther B. B. Hill, daughter of Samuel Hill of South Boston. Her life ended prematurely through an illness on 15 September 1855. He married secondly, Susanna Champney Reed on 25 August 1858 in South Abington, Massachusetts. He was then serving as pastor of the High Street Baptist Church of Charlestown, Massachusetts. Rev. Colver pastored churches in Massachusetts, Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin. He died 28 October 1896 in Chicago, Illinois. His second wife, Susanna, died 12 September 1889 also in Chicago.

A major phase of economic expansion occurred in southern England during the second and early first millennium BC, accompanied by a fundamental shift in regional power and wealth towards the eastern lowlands. This book offers a synthesis of available data on Bronze Age lowland field systems in England, including a gazetteer of sites. The research demonstrates the importance of large-scale animal husbandry in the mixed farming regimes as evidenced in the design of the field systems which incorporate droveways, stock proof fencing, watering holes, cow pens, sheep races and gateways for stockhandling. It is argued that the field systems represented a form of conspicuous production, an "intensification" of agrarian endeavour or a statement of intent, to be understood in relation to the maintenance, display and promotion of hierarchical social systems involved in exchange with their counterparts across the English Channel.
