Finding a Replacement for the Soul

Book Description

Approaching the study of literature as a unique form of the philosophy of language and mind--as a study of how we produce nonsense and imagine it as sense--this is a book about our human ways of making and losing meaning. Brett Bourbon asserts that our complex and variable relation with language defines a domain of meaning and being that is misconstrued and missed in philosophy, in literary studies, and in our ordinary understanding of what we are and how things make sense. Accordingly, his book seeks to demonstrate how the study of literature gives us the means to understand this relationship. The book itself is framed by the literary and philosophical challenges presented by Joyce's Finnegan's Wake and Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations. With reference to these books and the problems of interpretation and meaning that they pose, Bourbon makes a case for the fundamental philosophical character of the study of literature, and for its dependence on theories of meaning disguised as theories of mind. Within this context, he provides original accounts of what sentences, fictions, non-fictions, and poems are; produces a new account of the logical form of fiction and of the limits of interpretation that follow from it; and delineates a new and fruitful domain of inquiry in which literature, philosophy, and science intersect. Table of Contents: Preface Note on Abbreviations Introduction: What Are We When We Are Not? Part I The Surface of Language and the Absence of Meaning 1. From Soul-Making to Person-Making 2. Being Something and Meaning Something Bibliography Acknowledgments Index This is an adventurous and unusual book. Bourbon moves back and forth between literary and philosophical contexts with ease, showing in multifarious ways how the one can, often in unexpected ways, illuminate the other. Throughout these wide-ranging explorations Bourbon uncovers a good deal about both the nature of literary meaning and our distinctive -- if tellingly irreducible -- relations to literary texts. --Garry L. Finding Soul in Work and Life

Book Description

The inspiration for the creation of this book comes from the age-old questions before us: Why don't we understand what life is ? What it is for? Why are we here on this good earth? The book is divided into four parts, which represent four stages of transition, namely, Per-ceive, Pick up, Prepare, and Proceed. First, we look at the current state of things to decipher, why we continue to remain unhappy thro-ughout our life (Per-ceive). Anne Lamott, a witty writer of fiction and non-fiction books, would probably des-cribe it as the abyss we are in. A first step toward the restoration is to understand why, despite everything that we may possess, we are unhappy. Second, we need to comprehend or as we call it, Pick up the wisdom of the ages; the so-called lenses that will help us gain a new perspective on our unhappiness and do something about it. In search of these lenses, we look at karma, a metapysical view of life and its purpose, a view that has shown staying power. Here, in plain English, we present the key concepts and disrobe karma from its myths. Third, we Prepare: we examine life and work in the context of karma, to help us make the change, to lead ourselves to the right path to lasting happiness. Here, we also address issues and challenges of work-life within the context of karma. In the final part, we Proceed, that is, begin our journey to effect change using the newly found pyramid. Living by the pyramid, we believe we will succeed in achieving lasting happiness

Lost Souls

Book Description

These days it is no longer just adolescents who feel that the universe is falling apart. In Lost Souls, Niles Goldstein writes of the chaos and fear so many of us experience in our public and private lives and makes it clear that we are not--nor have we ever been--alone in our angst. To illustrate the different stages we often encounter when we feel lost--whether the trigger for our disorientation and despair is the loss of a loved one or a job, or the result of an injury or depression--Goldstein interweaves contemporary stories of men and women he has met through his work as a rabbi and a law enforcement chaplain with those of biblical figures such as Cain, David and Bathsheba, Samson, Tamar, and several of the prophets. As in his last book, God at the Edge, Goldstein explores the "shadow" side of the human condition. His accounts are often disturbing, but his insights are always inspiring. What he brings us is a message of particular relevance today, namely, that a journey through the wilderness--be it emotional, existential, or geographical--is a transformative and strengthening process, even though it may not seem so at the time. In chronicling the stories of survivors who have traveled through perilous and at times unexplored territory, Goldstein not only shows us how to face the challenges of being human, he also delivers a promise of meaning, direction, and hope in our lives.

Individuation for Adult Replacement Children

Book Description

Kristina E. Schellinski uncovers the hidden trauma of the replacement child – born into an atmosphere of grief to substitute for a lost sibling or other person – and helps adult replacement children discover the uniqueness of their self. Schellinski combines Jungian theory with research from over 20 years of clinical practice to demonstrate how adult replacement children who suffer from physical and psychological distress can rediscover the essence of their being in the transformative process of individuation. Theoretical yet practical, the book discusses core concepts of analytical psychology, psychoanalysis and attachment theory, and detailed case studies address grief, guilt, identity formation, relational challenges and shadow aspects. Schellinski explores how Jung’s birth after three dead children impacted his search for self and his theory and discloses her own personal experience. On treatment and prevention, she argues that by recognising elements of the condition, clinicians can facilitate acceptance, compassion and healing, and help reduce transgenerational transmission. This book is an indispensable tool for clinicians, analytical psychologists, psychodynamic psychotherapists and those in other medical professions, and will be of great interest to academics and readers interested in Jungian studies and existential questions. It offers adult replacement children and their families hope for a psychological rebirth.

Metaphysical Divine Wisdom on Universal, Physical, Spiritual and Soul Love

Book Description

The point of all existence in the end is connected to love, whether that is love for another person, self-love, or universal and spiritual love. One of the main reasons all souls are here is to learn the nature of love. Love is to understand that even the most heinous person in your eyes has love built deep down in the core of their soul. When you are in Heaven you truly understand what Universal love feels like. Love is the most powerful vibration that exists throughout all of time and space. Displaying hatred doesn’t take much effort, but to show love requires a complete soul do over in order to get back to that space your soul was born with. Love will always cost you something, whether that's time or energy. Love will cost you pride when you need to let go of something that someone else did and extend the olive branch. Universal, Physical, Spiritual and Soul Love examines one of the most powerful vibrations that exists and that is love. There are divinely guided discussions on what it means to display Universal love and spiritual love. There is a heavy emphasis on the connection nature between souls from the karmic to soul mates and twin flames, before devoting a good chunk on the practical, which is of great interest in the physical world. The mid-section of this acts as a dating and relationship guide to finding a quality mate in a world dominated by the darkness of ego. This is coupled with the challenges and benefits to finding and keeping love in a language that resides within the cold technology sphere. It would be awesome if every single person on the planet was keenly aware of their innate psychic abilities built into their soul’s DNA, because then Earth would be as close to Heaven as feasibly possible. There would be never-ending joy, peace, and love for every soul. Everyone would be operating from a higher vibration while moving mountains in the process. We see this kind of amazing uplifting joy in others when they’re in a high vibrational state. Universal, Physical, Spiritual and Soul Love has the goal and intention of filling the reader with as much as love as possible with the hope that it can motivate one soul back into their soul’s natural state of love. Some of the topics discussed in Universal, Physical, Spiritual and Soul Loveinclude: It’s All About Love, Creating the Life You Love, Self-Love and Self-Care, Karmic Soul Connections, Soul Mate Soul Connections, Twin Flame Soul Connections, The Benefits and Challenges of Technology Dating, Single and Longing for a Relationship, Love and Relationships, Love is a Battlefield, Seeking Love Through External Validation, Divine Soul Love, Love Yourself Back to Life, Bring Out the Good Vibrations, Universal Spiritual Love, and much more! Let more Light into your soul's life with the Metaphysical Divine Wisdom collection of books. Each cover a variety of distinctive themes connected to the spiritual and the practical interwoven and back around again. The Metaphysical Divine Wisdom practical motivational guide to spirituality series of books include Psychic Spirit Team Heaven Communication, Soul Consciousness and Purpose, Manifesting Fearless Assertive Confidence, Balancing the Body, Mind, and Soul, Increasing Prayer with Faith for an Abundant Life, and Universal, Physical, Spiritual and Soul Love.
