Finding the Worth-While in Europe (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Finding the Worth-While in Europe For this reason I have little to say of the great cities which I have found very much like each other and like our own, but I do aim to show the way to some of those places in every land to see which will surely make of the trip a pleasant memory. Many of these are included in every well planned European tour, but some are not, and take my word for it and be not afraid to turn aside sometimes from the beaten track, for in the odd corners of the earth are often found its greatest beauties. Ninety Days Worth of Europe (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Ninety Days Worth of Europe There has been no period till now when we have had a smooth enough sea for me to write even thus ill. But really our detail has been little. It is just possible that a schooner may have announced that she spoke as Wednesday night. If she arrives at Boston, it will not be that she has not been sent to a hotter place by everybody who has alluded to her in our party (excepting me, who sympathize with her skip per, and am afraid I should have done just what he did). The skipper thought he was going to be run down, and fired two guns. This he should never have done, unless he were in distress; but, as he did it, gallant Capt. Leitch in all that stiff gale lay by, and sent a boat on board him, only to learn that his distress rose from his fears that he did not see him. So, as far as I can learn, he got quite distinctly con demned for his pains; and we proceeded again to our business of getting to Europe. By rigid con tinuance in it, we were able to take a pilot this morn ing: a very pretty and exciting sight, two pilot schooners vying for our custom, and the successful Bluenose having to pull a mile in his fine little dory over such waves as you never saw. By the time he reached us, his nose was as red as a peach blow. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. By-Ways of Europe (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from By-Ways of Europe The cause of my having travelled so extensively has been due to a succession of circumstances, of a character more or less accidental. My prolonged wanderings formed no part of my youthful programme of life. I cannot dis connect my early longings for a knowledge of the Old World from a still earlier passion for Art and Literature. To the latter was added a propensity, which I have never unlearned, of acquiring as much knowledge as possible through the medium of my own experience rathe. Than toaccept it, unquestioned, from anybody else. When I first set out for Europe I was still a boy, and less acquainted with life than most boys Of my age. I was driven to the venture by the strong necessity of providing for myself sources of education which, situated as I was, could not be reached at home. In other words, the journey Offered me a chance of working my way. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. First Impressions of Europe (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from First Impressions of Europe The title of this little volume might well serve for its preface also. On his first return from abroad, the novice, possibly because familiarity has some tendency to blunt intuition and dim the vividness of national contrasts, is apt to be more closely questioned about his impressions than is the veteran traveler. Such impressions, however, while frequently they may be of value in disclosing new view-points, should, in many cases, be offered tentatively, and rather as personal opinions than finalities. Our journey was undertaken without pre-consultation of guide-books. When visiting a famous place, first the results of observation and direct local inquiry were noted; then Baedeker and his professional brethren were consulted, but merely for corroboration or a few essential statistics. We can recommend every step of the tour herein described to those entering upon their European novitiate; indeed, we have hopes that the book, with all its limitations, may prove a convenient vade-mecum to more experienced travelers, and help them to while away a few hours of oceanic monotony. Glimpses by Sea and Land

Book Description

Excerpt from Glimpses by Sea and Land: During a Six Months' Trip to Europe Whilst giving "the desire expressed by many of the writer's friends" - to have the fragmentary letters contained in this little volume thus collected and published, as the inducement for so doing - sounds rather hackneyed, yet, being no more trite than true, in the absence of any better reason, it may be allowed to pass. And in truth it may be added, that but for this, they would not at any time have come before the public. These extracts are the same, with very little exception, that appeared in The Friend in the First month of 1863. But they were carefully read over before reprinting on account of many typographical errors, which, owing to absence from home, the writer missed the opportunity of correcting at the time it ought to have been done; also, for the purpose of re-adjusting some awkwardly expressed paragraphs, which in the too hasty preparation for the press, were mutilated in making partial omissions. On the Wing Through Europe (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from On the Wing Through Europe HE letters contained in this volume were written hastily for the Daily Ohio State Journal, of Columbus, as I could catch a moment's time on the cars, or while stopping for rest during the intervals of travel and sight-seeing. I had no expectation that they would be received with so much favor, and I cannot but think that the words of apprecia tion so often addressed to me come from over-par tial friends, and that, on the other hand, I have not heard the criticisms of those less favorably impressed. It has often occurred to me that many, while traveling abroad, do not derive that instruction and entertainment which they might, and fail to have their interest sufficiently awakened in the novel and lovely scenes through which they are passing, because they have not, by previous preparation, informed themselves of the countries and peoples which they.
