First Year in French (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from First Year in French This book is intended for the use of children. In writing it, the author has aimed to ally two contending systems of teaching languages, one of which is known as the Natural or Conversational Method, the other as the Translation Method, with the regular teaching of grammar. It may be used as follows: - The first ten lessons are object lessons, the vocabularies of which contain only names of objects found under the eyes of children, in any schoolroom, or easily at hand. These vocabularies are generally divided into several parts, each of which contains words or model sentences, and corresponds to one of the exercises that follow. The teacher, taking each part of the vocabulary separately, and making or asking the children to make suitable movements, first speaks alone, then makes the children repeat, and writes on the blackboard what has just been said. Finally, when he has made everything in that part of the vocabulary clear for his pupils, he begins a conversation with them, and multiplies his questions until all have answered satisfactorily. Illustrated First Book in French (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Illustrated First Book in French The present work is intended for children who can read, but who have not yet any knowledge of the grammar of their own language. For this class of scholars object-teach ing seems the most suitable; that is, connecting the instruo tion with an object presented to the eye. This mode has been generally followed in the lessons in this book. Pictures have been prepared for the purpose, and the lessons, in Part First, directly refer to the objects in the pictures. Each lesson is headed by a name, which, in connection with the illustration, helps to impress the subject-matter of the les son upon the mind, enables the student to recall it more readily, and creates a more lively interest. In Part Second, the lessons refer to the illustrations in Part First, recall the name of each picture, enlarge upon the subject, and, by associating new ideas with it, keep alive the interest. First Book in French (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from First Book in French IN preparing this book, particular attention has been paid to the needs of those beginning the study of a foreign language. The arrangement of the book is designed to combine the inductive and deductive methods of teaching French, and, as far as possible, to eliminate the disadvantages of each. The French vocabulary is based on the reading selection and is presented, not by artificial lists, but according to the natural principle of association of ideas. From the outset, connected passage: for reading are given; they include a broad range of everyday, conversational topics, and many incidental allusions to historical and literary subjects that allow fur ther expansion in the oral work of the classroom. The book readily lends itself to the needs of classes in which the advantages of the direct method are combined with those of the grammatical method. A First Course in French (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A First Course In French Unimportant points and exceptions have been omitted with the aim of avoiding the mass of detail so confusing to beginners. Efforts have been made to stimulate the student's interest by the following devices: (1) the book is profusely illustrated (2) the French exercise in each lesson consists of a connected paragraph, based on the picture of that lesson (when one is given) (3) the French exercises of the first thirty-three lessons take up home and school topics, while those of the remaining lessons describe successive incidents of a trip to Paris. Thus the vocabulary is that of everyday life and, incidentally, it is such as would be needed by anyone visiting France.
