The volume comprises the proceedings of the second International Conference on Dynamics in Logistics LDIC 2009. The scope of the conference was concerned with the identification, analysis, and description of the dynamics of logistic processes and networks. The spectrum reached from the planning and modelling of processes over innovative methods like autonomous control and knowledge management to the new technologies provided by radio frequency identification, mobile communication, and networking. The growing dynamics confronts the area of logistics with completely new challenges: It must become possible to rapidly and flexibly adapt logistic processes and networks to continuously changing conditions. LDIC 2009 provided a forum for the discussion of advances in that matter. The volume consists of one invited paper and of 47 contributed papers divided into various subjects including mathematical modelling in transport and production logistics, routing in dynamic logistic networks, sustainable collaboration and supply chain control policies, information, communication, autonomy, adaption and cognition in logistics, radio frequency identification in logistics and manufacturing networks, applications in production logistics, and logistic solutions for ports, container terminals, regions and services.

Interpreting Networks


Book Description

After postmodern critique has deconstructed, decentered, and displaced order and identity on all levels, we are faced with the Humpty Dumpty question of how to put the pieces back together again. This book brings together the seldom associated discourses of hermeneutics, actor-network theory, and new media in order to formulate a theory of a global network society. Hermeneutics re-opens the question of unity in a fragmented world. Actor-network theory reinterprets the construction of meaning as networking. New media studies show how networking is done. Networks arise, are maintained, and are transformed by communicative actions that are governed by network norms that make up a social operating system. The social operating system offers an alternative to the imperatives of algorithmic logic, functionality, and systemic closure that dominate present day solutions to problems of over-complexity in all areas. The world of meaning constructed by the social operating system is a mixed reality in which filters and layers replace the physical restraints of space and time as parameters of knowing and acting. Society and nature, humans and non-humans come together in a socio-sphere consisting of hybrid, heterogeneous actor-networks. This book proposes reinterpreting hermeneutics as networking and networking as guided by a social operating system whose norms are based on new media. There emerges a theory for a global network society described by different concepts than those typical of Western modernity.







Mindful Change in Times of Permanent Reorganization

Since the 1990ies, organizations from different sectors have been operating in increasingly dynamic socio-economic environments characterized by unexpected events and instability. Organizations tend to adjust to dynamic environments by change initiatives promoting permanent reorganization. Such change initiatives often induce unintended effects, e.g. an erosion of trust, the violation of ‘psychological contracts’ in employees’ eyes or a decrease in organizational effectiveness. This book explores and analyzes whether such unintended effects can be anticipated or constructively dealt with by mindful change. The latter refers to the concept of organizational mindfulness that originally is linked to risk and safety research, e.g. in respect to ‘High Reliability Organizations’. In this book, organizational mindfulness is re-conceptualized addressing organizational change in the perspective of organizational sustainability. Moreover, it is explored how institutions foster or restrict organizations’ capability of organizational mindfulness in change processes.

Incentives to value the dispatchable fleet’s operational flexibility across energy markets


Book Description

The work at hand participates with the energy transition toward decarbonized electricity production by providing a method to analyze the incentives for the dispatchable fleet to provide flexibility. It analyzes the signals set by the energy markets to investors and power plant operators regarding flexible power plant operation and the future requirement of thermal plant flexibilisation, with improvement suggestions. A method for the quantitative, long-term, high-resolution techno-economic assessment of an individual power plant’s operational flexibility is proposed. It includes the single unit self-scheduling problem of a merchant power plant solved from a price-taker perspective in the day-ahead, intraday and frequency control markets, as well as a parametric power plant model suited for operational flexibility assessments. The retroactive observation of the merchant power plants’ operation strategies in these markets is used to identify best practices in terms of market design for flexibility incentives. The value of operational flexibility improvements is quantified using various metrics, for different technologies and market environments. Despite their sensitivity to market design, technologies and cost structures, these results indicate that if investors further expect a three to five-year return on investment, the existing European conventional fleet is unlikely to experience a significant flexibilization.
