They have been selected to this end, and are, through the exigencies of the subject, mainly examples of that "lyrical cry" by which personal human emotion is expressed in rhythm and rhyme. Though many of them are long familiar to the lover of English literature, and none appear for the first time, I believe this to be the most representative collection of love-poems that has hitherto been compiled. The reader can hardly fail to notice with surprise the extraordinary variety of style, thought, and treatment which is to be met with, in dealing with the single subject of Love in its different phases.
