Deployable structures are mobile constructions with a great variety of spacial peculiarity, extent and layout. The documented workshop “Digital Fabrication & Deployable Structures” investigates in their history and tests how those flexible structures can be digitally fabricated and parametrically designed using lasercutting technology. The resulting prototypes were developed in a collaborative process and furthermore functionalized by the embedment into a narrative. Abbaubare Strukturen oder “Deployable Structures” sind mobile Konstruktionen mit einer großen Varianz in ihrer räumlichen Ausprägung, Ausdehnung und Anordnung. Während des dokumentierten Workshops “Digital Fabrication & Deployable Structures” wurde erst deren Geschichte untersucht und dann erprobt, wie eben solche flexiblen Strukturen mittels Lasercutting Technologie digital hergestellt und parametrisch entworfen werden können. Die Ergebnisse wurden in Gruppen prototypisch hergestellt und durch die Einbettung in einen Narrativ mit einer Funktion belegt.




Fold Fly Inflate

Die Begrenzung der verfügbaren Ressourcen sowie die wirtschaftlichen und klimatischen Kosten von Energie führen unweigerlich zu leichteren Konstruktionen als notwendigem Mittel zur Verbrauchsreduzierung. In den dokumentierten Workshops „Flying Structures“ und „Fold Fly Inflate“ wurde untersucht und getestet, wie diese leichten Strukturen digital hergestellt werden können und parametrisch unter Verwendung von Laserschneid- und 3D-Drucktechnologie entworfen. Die resultierenden Prototypen wurden in einem kollaborativen Prozess entwickelt. The limitation of available resources and the economic and climatic costs of energy inevitably lead to light constructions as a necessary means of curtailing consumption.The documented workshops “Flying Structures” and "Fold Fly Inflate" investigates and tests how those light structures can be digitally fabricated and parametrically designed using lasercutting and 3D printing technology. The resulting prototypes were developed in a collaborative process.

An Anthropological Trompe L'Oeil for a Common World

Our political age is characterized by forms of description as ‘big’ as the world itself: talk of ‘public knowledge’ and ‘public goods,’ ‘the commons’ or ‘global justice’ create an exigency for modes of governance that leave little room for smallness itself. Rather than question the politics of adjudication between the big and the small, this book inquires instead into the cultural epistemology fueling the aggrandizement and miniaturization of description itself. Incorporating analytical frameworks from science studies, ethnography, and political and economic theory, this book charts an itinerary for an internal anthropology of theorizing. It suggests that many of the effects that social theory uses today to produce insights are the legacy of baroque epistemological tricks. In particular, the book undertakes its own trompe l’oeil as it places description at perpendicular angles to emerging forms of global public knowledge.
