This book is an outcome of the workshop on water demand forecasting in 1985. It summarises the 'state-of-the-art' in water demand forecasting, and identifies some of its links with environmental issues. The book discusses some of the issues raised in more detail and provides case studies.

According to the United Nations, three out of five people will be living in cities worldwide by the year 2030. The United States continues to experience urbanization with its vast urban corridors on the east and west coasts. Although urban weather is driven by large synoptic and meso-scale features, weather events unique to the urban environment arise from the characteristics of the typical urban setting, such as large areas covered by buildings of a variety of heights; paved streets and parking areas; means to supply electricity, natural gas, water, and raw materials; and generation of waste heat and materials. Urban Meteorology: Forecasting, Monitoring, and Meeting Users' Needs is based largely on the information provided at a Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate community workshop. This book describes the needs for end user communities, focusing in particular on needs that are not being met by current urban-level forecasting and monitoring. Urban Meteorology also describes current and emerging meteorological forecasting and monitoring capabilities that have had and will likely have the most impact on urban areas, some of which are not being utilized by the relevant end user communities. Urban Meteorology explains that users of urban meteorological information need high-quality information available in a wide variety of formats that foster its use and within time constraints set by users' decision processes. By advancing the science and technology related to urban meteorology with input from key end user communities, urban meteorologists can better meet the needs of diverse end users. To continue the advancement within the field of urban meteorology, there are both short-term needs-which might be addressed with small investments but promise large, quick returns-as well as future challenges that could require significant efforts and investments.

Professor McNabb has produced an excellent overview of the management challenges facing public utilities in the 21st century. His description of the evolution, changes, and challenges of different types of utilities is insightful. What makes this book uniquely valuable is his addressing the variety of utility management responsibilities including human resources, information services, and strategic planning in a single volume. I recommend it highly. Jeffrey Showman, Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission, US An introduction to the current issues and challenges facing managers and administrators in the investor and publicly owned utility industry, this engaging volume addresses management concerns in three sectors of the utility industry: electric power, natural gas, and water and wastewater systems. Beginning with a brief overview of the historical development of the industry, the author looks at policy issues and discusses management ethics. He then examines a number of the major challenges in these organizational functions: management and leadership, planning, marketing, accounting and finance, information technology, governance, and human resources. In the final section of the volume he looks at issues specific to each of the three industry sectors. Accessible and comprehensive, this thoughtful exploration of the various issues facing managers in public utilities in the new century will prove a useful overview for students of business and economics, utility staff, and directors of local utility governing boards.

Lars Dannecker developed a novel online forecasting process that significantly improves how forecasts are calculated. It increases forecasting efficiency and accuracy, as well as allowing the process to adapt to different situations and applications. Improving the forecasting efficiency is a key pre-requisite for ensuring stable electricity grids in the face of an increasing amount of renewable energy sources. It is also important to facilitate the move from static day ahead electricity trading towards more dynamic real-time marketplaces. The online forecasting process is realized by a number of approaches on the logical as well as on the physical layer that we introduce in the course of this book. Nominated for the Georg-Helm-Preis 2015 awarded by the Technische Universität Dresden.
